I used to claim for what all I was entitiled to. These were costs from me doing my job.

The differences are as follows:

I didn't regulate my own expenses - like MP's regulate themselves.

I didn't cheat on my tax returns - like MP's avoiding capital gains.

I was paid by a company that had all the info of what I was claiming and would repremand me if I was taking the piss - MP's kept there claims secret from the people paying them (us) so they could shaft us.

My claims were for money I spent to do my job - An MP who lives 30 miles from Westminster does not need another house to do their job.

There you go.

I got outraged.

I claim all that I can.

However that "can" amounts to those items that I paid for out of my pocket to conduct the company's business.

As opposed to porn. Or a fking moat.

If you don't understand the concept of "justifiable expenses", then you're a bit of a halfwit, really.

ETA - actually, quite aside from the moral issue, is that if someone in private employ expenses dubious things, then it's also down to the employer to have checks in place to prevent it. In a company, it's in their best interests as it'll only hurt their bank balance. In the case of MPs, we, the taxpayers, are the ones footing the bill

Another one of those people who justifies crime, at whatever level, by claiming everybody's at it.

Well guess what, they're not & it's people like you that make me vomit.
It is possible to go through life without stealing or cheating you know & all in all it makes for a great life you should try it.

So who is it you're stealing from, your employer or the dole?

Open your eyes. Most of the MP's in question are claiming expenditure that they never made or for things that are way beyond any reason.

Anyone doing thst in a business would rightly be open to prosecution for fraud.

No wonder Governments get away with what they do, when gullible fools such as you are around to vote.

I don't think all MP's are on the take, but from reason reports and access to files it obvious that quite a few of these supposes MP's have been shafting the trust and pocket of the tax payer without hesitation.

If I lied on my tax returns I would be in prison, why are no MP's in prison? I work hard and play the system fairly, I feel incensed the people who represent me cannot do the same!

I find it difficult to believe that you are a hard working tax payer.

Schoolboy?
Labour spin meister?

I'm not going to feed you anymore you troll.

Now do the forum a favour and my blood pressure a favour and fk off!

I work from home and go out to see customers fairly regularly.

I claim for my fuel to and from the house, I'll claim for a meal if I'm out before 7am or after 7pm. I'll also stick in a claim for postage if I need to send something somewhere. I wont claim for mortgage costs or renovations. Thats what the salary is for.

I do too, or MP's spouse/family.

I have a second home for my work, because a) it is impossible, and I mean physically impossible to commute, and b) it's a significant cost saving compared to hotels.

I don't claim for everything I spend, I even do my own repairs where I can. Not paying some clown to change light bulbs, or do my gardening, or cleaning.

I claim for food, that is food at my second home, and any restaurant meals. Yes I would be eating at home, but I'm still paying for meals to be prepared and eaten at home by the family, and if at home I would have had some of that. However unlike MPs I don't take the pee.

All my expenses are fully accountable, and subject to discipline if I screw up, not hidden away and policed by myself.

You've now had several answers which have explained the whys and wherefores.

Now ps off and hope you get re-elected next time. Unless you really are the **** in Shorpe in which case I'll see you go down the steps after your sentencing.

And actually the reason why a lot of people were angry had nothing absolutely nothing to do with the money, it was because we've seen years and years of MPs taking the piss with legislation and any disagreement by the public was imperailly waved away with "well get yourself elected and do it constitutionally." The expenses thing was the first concrete thing we can get you on without getting elected ousrselves.

So yes, bugger off and realise some of you are considered to be lower than the gutter press. Well done.

Don't let the door slap you on the ass on the way out and don't come back.

edited due to angry typos at the troll.

Also edited to add why does the swear checker pick up one example of p i s s as in p*** off, but not taking the p*** ??

If I was an MP, and I thought it was the 'accepted thing' then too bloody right I would.

I doubt I would cross into the 'illegal' side but if I could get away with filling my moat, then it makes sense to split the cost umpteen million ways biggrin

From what I can see, very few of them "cheated" on the Capital Gains side of things. They exploited a piece of CGT exemption legislation which is open to all.

Agreed, they can nominate whichever property they like as main home according HMRC rules, however declaring that home as their second home might be a breach of the expenses rules, or not. It fails the "taking the mickey" test though.

I claim for my expenses that I incur doing my job and ONLY doing my job. So I claim my travel. I dont have an allowance per day, but I can claim meals that I have to pay for when travelling. Now Of course, when away for a week, I would "have to eat at home" but eating at home would not cost me 40euros for an omlette and a beer like it does where I currently am working! So I claim it.

However, I dont claim for every expense I incur when travelling on business. Only meals and board, newspaers, medications, chocies for the office etc, I pay for myself, and rightly so.

This wouldn't grate as much had they paid for the houses themselves......instead we paid for them and they get the profit tax-free....it's taking the p!ss right royally....

Don't get confused between breaking the law and behaving badly.

The vast bulk of them broke no laws.

The vast bulk of them did behave dishonourably.

I claim expenses for travel (taxis / trains / flights) to meetings with clients and subsequent meals or drinks that might go with these meetings.

Not birdbaths, biscuits and sofas for my home.

If i did, i would be sacked.

If i did and tried to cover it up i would be sacked and have a criminal prosecution coming my way.

I couldn't simply blame the system, give some of it back and then swan around as if nothing had happened.

I understand that Eric, but as it's them that made the rules....they say that everyone must pay their fair share yet they get a house, more or less for nothing, then they get all the profit from it tax free...seems a bit incongruous for them to harp on about IHT when they're filling their boots like this..as you say,not illegal but a p!ss boiler all the same..
