A very worrying development indeed.

I hope they're released unharmed. If the worst comes to the worst I hope Britain will take off the kid gloves, take the fight to the pirates and show no mercy.
Or maybe I've been watching too many war movies?

Fire the SBS in, blow the feckers clean out of the water. We need to be sending a very clear message here in my opinion.

you haven't been watching too many war movies- we've done it in the past in west african countries.

it was pretty dispicable that one of our warships just stood and watched from a 100m away. I would rather someone had the balls to at least risk the lives of the couple on the boat to at least give pirates a second thought when a british warship is in the area.

Agreed, the unit would have been chomping at the bit to be realised. It was the left hand not knowing what the right was doing among the senior ranks....as usual. The Units were on stand by as were the Booties of 45 commando sniper division, every one was at the bloody party and ready to rock.
I am not the USAs biggest fan, but ya got to hand it to em, they would have nullified the problem had they only been 100 meters away like the RN ship was at the time of the kidnap. Bloody senior Rupert's rolleyes Nothing changes, they were the same when i served.

It's a shame, but for once I'm glad the UK is at least sticking to a policy of not paying a ransom for our nationals. Hopefully next time our nationals float through the region they'll be left alone or just robbed, rather than kidnapped, as they'll know from experience there's no money in it. Especially as, if it were up to me, I'd have a gunboat, and some marines, in the area bombing the st of wherever they are hanging out. You know like we used to...

Have to say, what has happened here? ??

I remember back in the day, Iranian Embassy, Heathrow Hijackings, etc etc.

Back then the British reaction was prompt, direct and to the point!

Realy do feel for this poor couple!

Back then we had a world leader for Prime Minister who the entire world were scared of messing with because they knew she wasn't going to be pushed around.

Blair dreamed of being half as good as Thatcher and never achieved anything like it. Brown dreams of being half as good as Blair and if he ends up being 10% as good a leader I'd be surprised.

Still remember doco on the Libyan Embassy siege where a few of the terrorists mingled with the captives hoping to be get out. They were found and Maggie ordered 'none are to leave alive'.

Taken into enclosed courtyard at siege end and double-tapped: problem solved.

blunt and to the point ....

The British Armed forces has plenty of rather descrete and very handy units that are all probably willing to fight for the opertunity to "resolve this Somali issue" but that spineless gubberment is to wet!

It is now time to authorise the special forces to go in then. Even if the hostages are killed/injured in the rescue attempt they are dead anyway, so it is worth the risk...... I would rather die in a hostage rescue situation than at the hands of these scum.

I do hope Brown shows some leadership here and gives the green light.

Its funny how i get to watch insufferable ads telling me if i burn a DVD i'm supporting terrorism, but no one does anything about somali pirates, the flow of cash to the middle east for arms and the subsequent grey area of where that ends up.

Its like you and i driving our cars and being blamed for the death of the planet yet no one does anything about bloody great steel mills in china.

Perhaps its time the govt's of the western world looked at the bigger picture.

its funny that our troops are in the afgan and iraq fighting people that are so far away and primitive they are no threat to us where they are.....and we have somali pirates an actual threat to an english couple and we are not sending troops in...

Not forgetting that our RN ship was only 100 meters away watching it all happen rolleyes I know the lads would have been begging for a "go". The final decision would have been made by the MOD in London several thousand miles away. There would have been frustration on board that day.
Actions on need not have been immediate being that the pirates would have been on stand by. Two easy options would have been to either track that bloody great cargo ship (that they have now lost) that the couple were transferred to. Then strike strategically within the first 24 hours. Second option could have a unit "limpet" themselves to the crafts hull, there for being in situ ready for an operational "go". The second option would have had boots on the deck within minutes, optimizing the element of surprise.
This would have sent a very special message to the pirates that day. Dont fk with the British, or you will be dealt with directly.
