I thought Abu Dhabi had the oil (which enabled them to bail out Dubai)

As World police, should we not be insisting on a No Fly zone etc etc. smile

Take away the oil from the Arabs, would we be so accommodating to their practices on their own population. And if it is proved they have killed one of ours, what about embargo's etc.

nothing new....glitz n glamour for the rich and powerful...the ordinary are still the same. Nomads and desert people with very old style definition of morality and justice living in a desert. They dont really like foriegners. Get used to it....look around and be grateful for the life the foreigners have here in the UK.

"Nuke them from orbit" is bandied about plenty on here, but it's quite apt for this. Wipe this country off the map.

Stopping over in the airport for few hours is about as much time as I ever have or ever wanted to spend in Dubai.

Poor guy, I really hope the embassy manages to get them to hold someone to justice.

I worked there for a good few years, and never had a problem. As with most Middle Eastern countries, justice is 'brutal' to say the least, but if you just be normal, and use a bit of common sense, you'll be fine.

People on a stopover en route to somewhere else, being held for 8 weeks for having prescription codene for a bad back......FFS.

I travel extensively with work all round the World, and have an impressive bag full of medications that I have collected over the years, anti emetics, various anti biotics, imodiums, paracetamol, sumatriptans etc. I've been to Dubai twice, on layovers to HK, one a 24 hr stay, one a 4 day stay. Only recently have I found out that I could have been locked up for my medication bag! It is hardly well advertised.
On my latest trrip to HK, I spent ober a grand more on a flight to go direct, so as to not fall foul of any ridiculous laws out there, it just isnt worth the risk.

Never been there and no desire to go. BTW, here's what AOL news say about this.

http://travel.aol.co.uk/2011/04/14/british-tourist...

I've heard that any visitor who's dependent upon opiate-based medicine can be imprisoned and given not one public flogging but several.

There is a published list of banned medication but you probably wouldn't know it if you book online, a doctor's note is all that's needed. I do agree completely that the zero-tolerance stance at DXB, even for drugs available in Dubai, is bonkers. I take a doctor's note even for antihistamines.

You are deemed to be carrying drugs even if they're only in your system yes

No doubt our Foreign Secretary will raise this with the Emiratis whilst he is negotiating with them for a few extra aircraft to bomb Libya.
