Hacking scandal just keeps giving
Discussion
I find it quite striking how quiet the media is regarding the Guardian's false claims about the NOTW hacking Milly Dowler's phone. 200 people were sacked as a result of the paper closing - something it may not have done had they not made this claim.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised - the glee with which The Guardian and the BBC pursued Murdoch reflects the true 'cause' behind their coverage. I don't like the man, but watching those 'out to get him' hasn't done the press as a whole any good.
I'd guess this enquiry will make a few fairly pathetic recommendations which will then fall into obscurity.
Rather a shame as there have been some clear cases (such as Christopher Jefferies) have clearly been very wronged by the current system, and Levinson will be forever remembered for a few pathetic celebs and a lie that led to a newspaper closing.

I thought that the slight change was that the NOTW may not have WIPED the voicemail messages. As far as I am aware, it's still accepted that they were hacking the phone.
Yes you are correct, I meant to say deleted voicemails rather than hacked. The outrage was from the deletion and the hope it gave the family, in my opinion this would be a far worse 'crime'.There's still a big list of wrongdoings!

The One2One network she was on deleted VMs automatically after 72 hours, so yes they deleted themselves.
I used to be on One2One and can remember this.
Deleted even if unread? If not, that may explain the two different PoVs - if the system automatically deleted them 72hrs after they had been marked as read (by the NotW).I used to be on One2One and can remember this.
In any case, this detail is more a case of The Grauniad getting the wrong end of the stick on a fairly small matter. But your posting does read exactly like the article that poor John Ungoed-Thomas had to write for the ST last week.
You are right though about the whole Dowler thing overshadowing the treatment of 'lesser' figures. I hope these people evidence is weighed equally by Leveson.

It's interesting regarding the article in the ST as I wasn't able to locate a copy of the paper last weekend last weekend! Searching I can see there is one by Jon Ungoed-Thomas in Google's search results but of course I can't activate it.In any case, this detail is more a case of The Grauniad getting the wrong end of the stick on a fairly small matter. As I remember messages were deleted even if unread, and our friends at the Mail state that "Milly’s pay-as-you go Nokia was registered to the One-2-One network which was later bought by T Mobile. The company confirmed yesterday that her messages would have been automatically deleted after 72 hours, whether anyone accessed them or not." This is as I remember.

I can't agree this was a small matter, it was the difference between unethical activities to get a story, and a newspaper becoming part of the story.
I have no resentment against the Dowler family and think they deserve our sympathy, VM messages deleted or not.
However, I have zero time for the likes of Hugh Grant or JK Rowling who have printed money from press attention (even with their claims "I never asked for it boo-hoo").
Both are free to never make another movie or release another book for public consumption, neither have experienced the pain of losing a child (or in Christopher Jefferies case being reported all over the place as being a weirdo, murderer and a paedophile).

Piers Morgan. What a dodgey slimeball.
Anyone else think he is not coming to the UK just incase there is a slim chance he may be arrested?
But he is a busy and succesful man...Anyone else think he is not coming to the UK just incase there is a slim chance he may be arrested?
From what I have seen, the QCs havent come across that well in the questioning.
There was a funny bit when the QC made a flowery statement and just looked at the screen waiting for PM to 'answer' or comment.
PM - "Is there a question in that?"
QC - "I am asking teh questions Mr Morgan...."
School kids could have done better at times.
Oh well - still think PM may have been up to his neck in it but if it cant be proven, my opinion counts for nout!
