Biggest Rip Offs

It seems weird for sure, but I'm pretty sure it can be explained by economics rather than blaming the government.
I blame the Government for selling off the railways and still trying to run them from the outside years later.munky said:
Supply & demand for one - is Steffan comparing a peak rail fare with an off-peak air fare for example? Booked how far in advance? I notice he chose Pisa - which probably means he's talking Ryanair.
I haven't used a train for years so I'm hardly an expert. Further proof of how a car is better. If I don't pre-book with my car it doesn't suddenly cost more to go somewhere if I need it in a hurry. I'm also afraid of flying so can't offer much of an opinion about airlines.munky said:
Absolutely. All manufacturers of LCD and plasma displays loses money on them as well, there is a glut of supply capacity. Electronics have become a lot cheaper over time thanks to China. Which causes other problems of course.
It's not so much because of China although of course they make a huge amount. Only 15-20 years ago the Japanese had a large share of the electronics market, but then the South Koreans kicked down the door with Samsung and LG which dragged the value down for an entire range of goods. Most LCD displays are made by South Korean firms and you're right they don't make any money out of them. Toshiba are struggling these days after HD DVD went down the pan. Moores Law certainly ringing true.Take it from me, electronics chains such as Comet and the like will exist only online within 20 years.

Isle of Wight Car Ferries
Make your own way there, then.By the way, I have a winner. While looking to see if my local BestBuy sold powercables,, I found this :
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/AudioQuest+-+10%26%233...
I think I've seen a HDMI cable around the same price as that ^... Nuts, but the thing is though, there are plenty of good alternatives at much lower prices so you can never feel like you have to have that or nothing... So not really a rip off.
Another vote for cinema popcorn. I watched a Heston Blumenthal program a while back that covered cinemas, and apparently the massive bags of popcorn they have (that might fill say 10 or more boxes) cost a few pence per bag... The boxes cost more than the popcorn. Now, you expect stuff like that to have a huge markup but... really?! (So yes, buy some from Tesco.)

oooh a few good things there
£12 for a pizza?! where the hell do you people eat out at?! the Ritz pizzeria?
Printer cartridges have to be for me - they're recycled just refilled - still it costs £40-50 each time
the train tickets is a good one too - they say you have to pre-book etc to get the cheaper deals but so often the trains are still empty
razor blades - loving my beard for the past ten years thanks to their pricing!
kids toys - f
king ridiculous pricing!! its like nike trainers all over again. £40 for a doll with some crappy clothes wtf.
replacement chargers - I've got a rechargable flashlight - the charger's gone missing so i emailed the company with regards to a replacement - they quoted me a price more than it cost me to buy it.

I can't see why the rip off claim against water, you are paying for convenience...the alternative is a very long hose and a fridge on your back!
An alternative I would suggest. If I'm going to be away from a tap for any length of time I fill my cycling bottles with tap water or, if I'm feeling flush, visit Starbucks.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned the Dartford crossing yet.
Pffft. Severn Bridge.Anyone mentioned motorway service stations yet? Licence to print money they are. One Service station lacky on the news one day justified it because they were out of the way to get fuel and food etc to.

The difference being I don't think we were told that the Severn bridge was ever going to be toll free after it had finished paying for itself. Anyone mentioned motorway service stations yet? You can choose to buy from other sellers, or make your own, or just to not eat Pizza. Surely a rip off is more like being charged £2 for a 40p bottle of water when you're in a closed venue or similar.
On the way out of madstock concert (early 90's?) A chap in an ice cream van was attempting to charge £2 for a can of coke! f![](/inc/images/censored.gif)

So trains are terrible because you have never used themEdited by martin84 on Saturday 4th August 01:56

Nightclubs, £20 to get into a venue which is full of asshats when I can have a much better time in somewhere free.
Busses in small towns. In no way is £7 acceptable for a bus from Bristol to Bath, I could get a train to Cardiff for that.
Takeaway coffee. £3 for a cup of coffee to walk down the street isn't good. To sit down and drink I understand, you are using their facilities and taking up space.
Scandinavia
Cannes. I'm here right now and this place makes Venice look cheap. 20 Euros for a 3 minute taxi ride, 65 Euros for a steak and chips, 10 Euros for a can of coke, 25 Euros to use a beach sunbed for the day!
Thank god we are only here for 2 days, as a week of this and I'd have to sell the cat.
