I think Charles is going to struggle to have anything like the impact of his mother, she has been an utterly incredible one-off.

William would seem to be rather more the sort of monarch appropriate to today's age.

Odd on him abdicating and giving it to William?

He must feel a lot of public pressure to do so. Technically he has now achieved his life's goal of becoming King... Does he follow protocol or the will of the people?
IMO, no chance. He's waited all his life for this so I can't see it happening anytime soon.
Charles will be King out of duty and to ensure William can lead as normal a life as possible for as long as possible before having to do the job

I think she generally always knew what to say and what not to say. She always seemed to understand that being possessed of strong opinions about issues which are naturally divisive were dangerous for a constitutional monarch to express. She also had the advantage of being of the war generation and I think is held in great affection for this reason amongst many.

C3 is a much more overtly complex character. He does seem to have courted controversy over the years, but no so much recently. I am not that bothered about his views on most issues, but I can see that it will jar with the public to be lectured about environmental issues given the present cost of living crisis. I don't know how he will connect with the public, to be honest. With that said, I think he will be given a chance by most people. How he reforms the institution will be complex and challenging.

Every time I hear 'King Charles' my brain follows it with 'Spaniel'.

As not the King, Charles was entitled to have his opinion, and lobby to make a difference in policy.

As King his role is very different, which is not to say he will be without influence. He has been training for this for many years.

I'm confident that he will fill the role well.

Indeed. Charles might well reign for 20 years and perform faultlessly, but he will inevitably be compared to his mother, and regardless, with some, be criticised as somehow falling short.

His mother's example of service is not something I believe he will shirk from.

I think he will be a good King and he will be modernising ready for the handover to William. In reality Charles will probably only have 20 years at the most, probably15 of them active. That will give Williams children time to grow up and become teenagers, before he becomes King.

In time, new Bank Notes and coinage... yesterday's events were rapid from the initial announcement of concern by doctors to the Queen's passing. I think this will hasten independence of a lot of West Indian countries looking to copy Barbados. It will be an unusual few days. Liz Truss has been thrown in at the deep end as PM with all these events, having just met with the Queen 2 days before. frown

I think quite a few Commonwealth countries will now look to remove the monarch as head of state.

To be honest the UK would do well to follow suit, this deferential class system thing that some people still insist upon is outdated and is holding the Uk back as a country.

It’s what she wanted so it’ll do me. Won’t be that long before it’s Will and Kate they seem to get it.

I posted on the QE2 thread that he's got a huge pair of court shoes to emulate. I don't think he'll manage it. Especially with Queen Camilla. That just doesn't sit right with me. Can't say why, but it doesn't.

I feel Jamaica, Australia and New Zealand will push for Republics sooner rather than later.

He's got a job on his hands keeping the Commonwealth together that's for sure.

How so? A large proportion don’t have the king as head of state, in fact a number of nations have joined in recent years with no ties at all to the empire? Rwanda for example. The Commonwealth has gone from strength to strength in recent times.
