It's never been mentioned to me in Argentina. But you will hear "la mano de Dios" when they find out you're English.
Does Dios mean 'fat cheat' in Argentinian? biggrin

Ah just you wait until they hear they're going to have abortion banned and be able to sell their kidneys. They'll be part of Argentina quicker than you can say Belgrano.

But seriously, question for you JCF - you seem enormously keen to support this latest Libertarian maniac's "reasonable" policies, even to the extent of being happy to see the sovereign will of British subjects questioned. Why? How does him saying that they rightly belong to Argentina and that he would seek a diplomatic solution "sound reasonable enough", when there is absolutely no question whatever around the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands and its people? I've got a funny feeling that you'd be the first person to throw your toys out of the pram if anyone should question the result of, say a UK referendum which took place in 2016, yet you seem to be willing to disregard the wishes of the Falkland Islanders, as clearly and vociferously expressed when they've been asked.

He does not sound like an ally of the British people of the Falkland Islands to me. Why are you so keen to be on his side?
I wouldn't say enormously keen. I hadn't actually heard of the bloke until some time last week. I like the look of his policies around inflation, covidism, climate change and a few other things that make the BBC and co call him "far right." I am also very happy to see people like Sergio Massa, "experts" who have led their countries to ruin by their stupid policies, booted out.

As I understand it the constitution of Argentina includes the claim to the Falklands, so it was already "disputed." Ireland had a similar claim in its constitution up until the GFA. He doesn't seem to be promising to retake the Islands, just ruled out a military solution.

https://peoplesdispatch.org/2023/11/14/one-week-be...

If anything it sounds more like Massa was trying to bang the nationalist drum.

10 million over a decade, huge amount of "dark money" and we should all be concerned yet it takes over a billion to get the supposed most powerful man in the world elected. For the avoidance of doubt from the little i know about Milei he sounds like a fruitloop (would probably get on great with Boris) and anyone in Argentina that feels confident enough to voice the opinions he has has a lot of guns and money behind them.

You could speak to 99% of ordinary Argentinians for an hour about politics/how their country is run and afterward realise they have told you absolutely nothing at all because they are terrified someone that knows them will stick them in to the "authorities" if they say anything bad. A horrible state of affairs unlikely to change soon as too many have been disappeared over the years for expressing views far more mild than many do freely on this forum.

That's not really the case any more, at least in my experience. All the ordinary Argentinians I know are pretty vocal about the fact that they've had a useless shower in charge for far too long.

That's good to hear, the above was some time ago.

I don’t know anything about Milei but I do know that one of my favourite films is Argentinian - Relatos salvajes / Wild Tales. Five short stories - two car related. The blackest comedy I think I’ve seen. But watching it you think that perhaps Argentina is a bit fked up in reality.

I have an Argentinian friend. Hearing his stories about his family (he has managed to escape to NZ) and how everything has been going to st I can guess that they voted for Milei out of desperation. Probably with a “he can’t be worse” attitude.

Argentina must start holding bitcoin reserves. Another country with legal tender dollars means another on-ramp for FIAT to crypto.

I have a few Brazilian friends who said as much when Bolsonaro was elected.

They’ve had plenty of time to reflect on that particular naïveté!

Indeed the "smart outsider TV commentator who seems to have all the answers" never seems to really work... the 5 star guy in Italy, the rebel economist in Greece...hell, even Trump and Bojo. Doing vs commentary are very different.

Argentina’s per capita GDP globally ranked, during classical liberalism and after imposition of socialism.

I've heard rumors of 50% of the population are state employees (I'm assuming they didn't vote overwhelmingly for Milei). Which if true, just shows how encroachment of government size affects actual economic productivity and trying to keep up with obligations they print money and cause inflation.

No that can't be right, we've had it patiently and exhaustively explained to us in this very thread how his position on the Falklands, as with every other position he holds, is "reasonable".

In appearance, he reminds me somewhat of Benny Hill, but with a genuine craziness behind the manic displays. As someone else said, I don't see how you reconcile "libertarian" with "catholic".
On the plus side, he intends to move away from russia and the BRICS, having denounced russia's invasion of Ukraine, and move closer to the US. That's a complete 180 and a positive as far as geopolitics goes.
As we've seen with many events over the last couple of decades, the further the pendulum is pulled one way, the greater the shock when the correction inevitably comes.

He's got one thing right - Argentina has to be turned into somewhere appetising for anyone in their right mind to wish to join it.

If it was the will of the islanders to become Argentine then that would be fine and dandy.

The odds of that seem... remote.

rofl The islanders have as decent a claim in the other direction, not as good as the indigenous population though. Perhaps the descendants of the italian, welsh, german, spanish etc diaspora should relinquish political control to them? They could hardly make a worse job of it.
