An actual real advert from Mr Sunaks government.

Presumably the alternative is a crime wave of imaginary pick pockets..

It would be preferable to imaginary govt.

Your point about Rwanda and nobody having a better idea is not only immature but also quite wrong. There’s no magic solution, but implementing sensible, obvious and functional measures might see some improvement. The current lot have cut back on border forces, coastal patrols and not engaged fully with the French or the EU, I’ll stick my neck out and say that reversing that trend and dropping batst ideas like Rwanda might be a start
We are giving the French millions to police it (and very much engaged with assisting with same).

The risk of the crossing is plainly not a deterrent in itself & the coast line is too long to be policed effectively.

The Rwanda message is quite simple: Even if you are stupid enough to get on one of these boats and you actually make it across, you won't be staying,

That piece of the jigsaw is not currently in place. I can see nothing counter-productive in adding it,

It’s very arrogant to describe people getting on the boats as stupid. Try desperate and brave.

So two of them - James Heappney as well. Both resigned from their ministerial roles. End of days..

Does increasingly look like a meltdown. It's interesting that I've never heard of most of these people which reflects my belief that it's a crap generation of politicians.

I wonder (hope) some fresh conviction politicians with something worthwhile to say will surface at the election but my fear is just more politics grads, ex SPADs and the usual vanilla suspects.

Poppycock wishful thinking.
These 2 ministers are simply making way for new talent a pool of which has rarely been seen before.
The new announcements may not be familiar names but I believe that they will rise to the challenge and assist Mr Sunak in meeting his 5 key priorities

The problem is that under UK law you can only apply for asylum (with the exception of a very very small number of people) once you arrive in the UK.

Over 70% of people arriving are granted asylum and so are requiring protection from something. By granting them asylum we are acknowledging that fact.

Those people will continue to come while they can expect to receive asylum here and while the only place to do so is on UK soil.

The government doesn't want the international backlash of withdrawing from it's human rights charters and obligations, but equally doesn't actually want to grant asylum to those people who it deems worthy of protection. As with everything else, they're trying to add 4 and 4 and make 10. Instead they are writing into law that Rwanda is a safe country, irrespective of any evidence to the contrary, and expecting Rwanda to uphold human rights obligations we want to ignore. The whole thing is so convoluted and arse about face that it's farcical.

There's really not much reason for optimism when ministers are quoting from fantasy fiction. I guess the next lot will get their inspiration from Minecraft.

Theres certainly an end of days feeling about it now. Epitome of a zombie government.

Doesn't seem they can do anything to turn the tide either. Like a plaster, they should just pull it off quickly and call a GE to end all our suffering.

They should, but they won't, becuase that wouldn't be in their best interests. And that's ultimately all they care about.

Halfon always struck me as committed & decent. Telling that neither he nor Heappey think it wortwhile staying on as Ministers, let alone standing down. Real circling the drain vibes now.

It’s actually quite disturbing. I had to make sure it was genuine before posting here as I couldn’t believe it was. I should have known not to expect better from the Conservative Party.
