Absolutely, it's clear that semi-automatic is 'better' for most purposes.

That being the case, what do you buy? Well, PSA has a sans lower AR-15 for $300 currently. They also have a lower for $50. So $350 plus transfer for a full bore semi-automatic rifle, beat that. That's quite expensive, actually. The above combination is usually on sale for ~$300.

The AR-15 is the choice for price and ease of use. There's nothing else that comes close. You want an AK? Twice the price. Anything else, more than that. You have a strange desire for another military style semi auto, such as the Tavor? $1600.

You're simply not going to buy anything else. It's the VW Golf R of the firearms world.

Low recoil, quite light, cheap to buy and so many options to customise and personalise it. Optics, laser sights, add all that in and it's quite easy to get a very good grouping at ranges.

It's not the guns that kill. It's the games.

Suitable. but there is an obvious advantage in using a semi automatic.

I've only done target shooting but from using both I'd choose to shoot an AR-15 type rather than a Bolt action Lee Enfield given the choice.
AR-15 for hunting? No way.

Indeed. In fact, many states ban it for hunting. Too small a caliber, likely to only would the prey. So it's limited to hunting small animals.

Pretty good for hunting people though.

Very very common, especially in the south.

Common to see hunters driving round on trucks at night shooting hogs. Even helicopters day or night, its big business as the hogs cause a lot of damage to crops. Hogs and deer are the 2 most hunted animals in the US and both are regularly shot with .223 although 300BLK and SPC are very popular too.

That said for AR the .450BM is now a very popular platform in some states. This is because many states prohibit bottle neck cartridges.

And this is the problem, Brits tend to think they know what they are talking about when it comes to US gun laws but they really really don't as its a complex area of US law especially more so as soon as you start hunting. There are rifle zones, mag limits, cartridge limits, ammunition restrictions, time restrictions, clothing restrictions etc etc.

So saying, no way you could use an AR15 to hunt with would literally get you laughed out of any gun shop in the USA.

I keep saying it over and over again but the British public seem to think they know better.

Pretty st for hunting people, really. That's pretty much the entire design objective of the round - small, lightweight, high velocity, it wounds, but doesn't kill, so you have to have a couple of troops help the injured soldier from the battlefield to a medic, then to a hospital. It removes 3 people from the battlefield for the price of one round.

As a hunting round, it's pretty feeble - hence the ban on using it for hunting large game, it doesn't kill cleanly.

Well ok, severely wounds people. And if those people are school children or people in Walmart who don’t have a couple of soldiers to get them to safety, they die pretty slowly and in pain presumably? Brilliant.

The alternative is .308 and a much greater likelihood of death.

Neither appeal to me, but one is fractionally less stty than the other.
