Given that London has seen 10 murders in the last 12 days, I could think of better ways to spend the money and resources.

It would be interesting to know the thoughts of officers on the case and what they truly believe with regard to Gerry and Kate's (alleged) involvement.

Probably posted before on this or another thread but this is always suspicious no matter what you might think.

3 sources, more if you google.

In that kind of situation if you had nothing to hide you'd be providing as much information as possible to help "find" your daughter, not refuse to answer.

I'm with you on this.
Without wishing to be cruel, there are only two possible scenarios - the girl is alive or she is dead. Personally, I think the latter is by far the most likely, but even if she was alive, she would be nearly 15 and would probably have little or no memory of her family.
Also - even if she is alive, the chances of finding her via a continued investigation of this nature is almost nil.

In other cases of child abduction where the child has been missing for this many years, if they ever are found again, most appear to be found by accident.

By all means if fresh evidence comes to light or a new line of enquiry opens up - then investigate. many cold cases have been solved like this. But continuing to throw money at a case without any clear direction is just a waste.

Finding out what happened means an end to the summer trips to the holiday resort. Cynical, moi?

Turning the whole thing on its head for a minute - is it possible that the Met have a hunch / circumstantial evidence that the parents are involved and are looking for evidence solid enough to arrest them?

If this is the case I’m happy for the money to be spent.

Good question. I’m sure that if they found incriminating evidence they could be arrested in the UK on instruction of the Portuguese plod, and then be extradited. Although the original crime was on foreign soil I’m sure they could be done for perverting the course of justice in the UK couldn’t they?

That's what I've been thinking/hoping.

I can’t remember which of these threads it’s on but fairly sure I have a memory of reading a PHer saying he had been chatting off the record, with a friend who is on the MET investigation team and his mate said something like they had some rather juicy evidence or line of enquiry but a higher up told them to shelve it and not speak of it.
Which of true gives the possible worst case of they know what happened but are not looking to prosecute.

Maybe if we are lucky one day someone from the MET will retire or be on their deathbed and flip the lid on the whole thing

To be fair, she is being questioned as a suspect rather than assisting as the mum of a missing child.

I think they are guilty mind, but not answering questions from foreign police, who will be under pressure to protect their tourist industry from damage, isn't suspicious to me.

I agree - it doesn't make any sense as to why good money is being thrown after bad.

It also doesn't make sense with my own personal conclusion that the parents are involved (accidental or otherwise) but the local plod ruined the crime scene before decent investigators could get a look and nothing can be used other than circumstantial evidence. The parents realised this and went mental on the media front to solidify their own position. All my own personal view, of course.

So, anything that would be remotely helpfull is long gone and that's why I don't get SY slogging away. Maybe it really was an abduction, but all the indicators point away from this - only the parents know.
I'm sorry but I've never bought the suggestion that the parents had anything at all to do with her disappearance. There simply isn't any evidence what-so-ever to support it. When you factor in managing to lie repeatedly over the course of a decade about killing (deliberately or otherwise) your own child and disposing of her body in a foreign country and in haste with 30 well trained detectives investigating things then it just seems so incredibly unlikely as to make it an essentially impossible theory.

It will never be solved. Abduction? No evidence of it. Parents involved? No evidence of it.

I can't understand how and why money is still being thrown at it?

Interesting piece on the cost of a missing person investigation. Turns out it isn't as much as this case

You can never say that something will never be solved. It's entirely likely that it will be.

Just because there is the possibility of it being solved isn't reason, of its self, to keep investigating it.

It will be the new Jack the Ripper case for the next 100 years. Everyone will have their own theories. Many books will be written.

Wouldn't they look utterly incompetent if they "solve" it after all these years and it turns out the truth was right under their noses all along?
