I am wondering why he wasn't searched. Surely his actions warranted a closer look. He said he proved to the police he was not on his phone and they let him go.

Really? how on earth did he prove that?

“Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Mr Dos Santos explained he had been driving his Tesla car along the A40 Westway and "went around" the police car to avoid driving into the back of it.

He then continued driving for a further five minutes before pulling over on Orsett Terrace.”

What a melt.

I want to see the police footage.

Guess we won't see it if this is potentially going to end up in the courts. An utter waste of everyone's time.

Hopefully Dos Santos gets some points / fine for driving without due care and attention, failing to stop and using a mobile phone.

I just wish theyd have said to him, seriously, what did you expect at 4am and not stopping? the Police would be well within their rights to assume it was either a TWOC or he was the local Gangsta/Drug lord out doing his business.

When it’s your typical council scrote who’s done a runner on the TV, they generally have a pretty severe face/pavement interaction……..just saying.

He is very unlucky to have been in the same situation on two different occasions.

There were probably no grounds for a search of him or the vehicle - being out in the early hours isn't sufficient grounds on its own

Refusing to stop should be grounds enough surely. I am perplexed how he got away scot free with his actions.

The message this puts out is very damaging and makes the job of policing practically impossible.

Got to set the wheels in motion for that compensation claim, and those sad face poses for Guardian articles.

He appears to have been stopped twice in over two years. When I was younger and I used to drive home from work in the early hours in my saxo VTR I used to get stopped on a far more regular basis than that and I am white, the reason I was driving during the early hours was that I was a serving police officer. Never bothered me.

I don’t think him getting stopped twice in such a long time period is unreasonable

It's not unreasonable at all. Perhaps some people's prejudices are bubbling up.

What is also not unreasonable is the Police having a heightened level of suspicion in the relatively few number of vehicles being out and about at 4am. I would assume they get a reasonable strike rate of drink drivers and other dumb criminals who think the cover of night protects them. All but one of the times I've been pulled in my youth have been in the middle of the night.

This guy was in a different car to the last stop I believe, so the notion that he is being persecuted by the Met is a bit silly. The BBC, though, were happy enough to push the narrative that this same black guy got stopped twice in two years ipso facto they have an agenda.

As has been said above the media was pretty breathless about this on the day it happened, with multiple videos and interviews being posted. The idea that this was done to crowd out any legitimate questions about why he had his phone in his lap, why he failed to stop, etc holds water in my opinion.

Smiler.

In my youth I seemed to get stopped at least once a year, maybe more often. I can think of 5 or 6 instances off the top of my head. The more I think about it the more times I remember!

I can't think of a single instance where I ignored them and drove on though.

Yeah, nor me.

I remember being stopped by the Police jogging home from a mate’s house, wearing a black hoodie. I was asked where I had been, where I was going, etc.

In retrospect maybe I should’ve taken massive offence and called the Beeb to let them know I’d been profiled as a burglar because of what I was wearing and what time of night I was out, instead of just assuming as I did at the time that it was a bit of proactive policing and that I looked sus af (as the kids say) running along at 2am in dark clothes and a hoodie.

Showed them the phone?
