None of the whinging non-smokers I know that used to bleat about not being able to go to pubs because of the smoke actually go to the pub now they're smoke free. Probably why so many pubs are closing.
Before the ban I knew of one non-smoking pub in my county. If there had been more demand there would have been more non-smoking pubs.
Supporting the ban is supporting the death of the British pub.

It does make me laugh though, to be able to sit in the pub garden enjoying a pint and a smoke and tell the whinging non-smokers to ps off indoors when they start moaning about the smell of smoke outside.

The re-legalization of non processed drugs and drugs that can be grown in the soil. So basically, cannibas and mushrooms. But then I guess opium and heroin would be open for debate.

If we could suggest new laws, changing the major A roads (303, 1, 38 etc etc) into a new class of road (trunk or something, T roads!", which lets lorrys do 50 or 56mph on the single lane sections.

Have a read of the comments by ASENNA

The ranting on about Safespeed's Paul Smith, the fact he's all over almost every proposal regarding speed limits, the posting of lots of somewhat tangential links, the rapid posting at 4 in the morning... this has got to be our old friend Spindrift/whatever else he's called himself on PH.

Amazing isn't it? You can tell it's that fascist after reading just a few lines of bile.

This is what I don't get though. I prefer the current state of affairs, but I'd go to the pub either way. Why would you stop doing something fun just because you can no longer smoke without having to pop outside now and then? Is having a few pints with some friends just much, much better with a cigarette as well, and I simply wouldn't understand because I'm a non-smoker? Or are the 'stay away from the pub' types just cutting off their nose to spite their face?

I really am genuinely interested. As I asked before - is it the addiction perhaps, or just that you've had it your own way for so long that means you're so pissed off over the ban?

Also - is it really just because of the smoking ban that pubs are closing? Pubs were closing long before the ban - maybe at a slower rate, I don't know. The pubs where I live seem to be doing very well, and I don't think there's anything different here than most other places. confused
Would you go to a place where you and your kind are not welcome?

Not solely but the smoking ban showed a huge acceleration in the number of pubs shutting, coincidence I think not and neither do the landlords of such pubs.

They know that the majority of their customers were also smokers.

Exactly it was a huge fib that all these non smoking none pub goers would suddenly start going to pubs more often.

True re all the non smokers coming outside to our section, fresh air freaks should stay in doors and leave the smirting for us interesting types.

Someone else has said on this site that he doesn't know of one good pub that has closed, and i totally agree. There aren't any good pubs in my neighborhood, so on Thursday nights i drive about 9 miles to a really good pub that is positively thriving.

I did know one pub though, that was it's brewery's biggest seller, so the landlord had his rent tripled. He left, the brewery spent a fortune in turning a country pub into a plastic identikit suburban pub and while it is still open at the present, every time we pass we check to see if it's closed yet. Just mentioning this for the record, in that it might become a pub that was once good and has closed. smile

So if you don't like a pub you're happy to see it shut? Is that the main criteria?

Pubs and that isn't just the ones you like and frequent are often the hub of the community and one of the few places old boys like to go have a few drinks, smokes chat to their friends etc.

But all that is a thing of the past now, as they are dead or dying - due to the smoking ban.

Bloody hell, it's not racial segregation!!

You're not a 'kind', you're a person who smokes.

You're still welcome, you just can't smoke inside.

How come, that as far as i'm aware, bars in France haven't closed down due to the smoking ban? I'd say it's because in France bars genuinely are a part of the communuity, where people go to to meet and chat and not get battered out of their brains, whereas in England pubs are just seen as cash cows by their owners/suppliers.

Obviiously many cash cows can be a part of a community, but not always, and hence they close.

The smoking ban hasn't made one jot of difference to any pub that people actually want to go to.

Talking of the smoking ban in France, how are they getting on over there?

Unlike the Spanish - you can't see the no-smoking signs because of all the smoke hehe

So say your tipple was lager but it was banned, would you still want to go to the pub every night, no of course not.

AFAIK outside of Paris the smoking ban is a joke, as the French have more sense than to be browbeaten by self justifying jobsworths.

No, correction 'that you want to go in'.

You smoke. The effluent of your habit is smoke that sticks to, and stinks up me and my clothes.
I drink. The effluent of my habit is piss and you don't see it or smell it unless beside me at the urinal.

How about I piss all over you so that you stink of my effluent tomorrow? Would you still go to the pub?

Anybody seen anyone getting nutted because the other person has had 6 Lambert & Butler?

Anyone heard of a child being killed because the driver had smoked a pack of 10 Marlboro before setting off?

Booze cause far more social problems than smoking ever will, hey lets ban it, then you can't enjoy your particular vice just like me.

Hey, I've always agreed that booze, if invented today, would be banned due to the health and social ills that it contributes to!

i don't care about any of that. All i know is that the chap next to me in the pub isn't going to ingest a sip of his pint and then spray it all over me.

The vast majority of people drink because they enjoy it, whereas people only smoke because they're addicted to it. They only think they're enjoying the fag but the reality is that they'd feel awful if they didn't have the fag. That's how addiction works.

Having had a look around the site I can't see a single law suggested for deletion that is worth keeping, smoking ban (at least partially) excepted...

Let's hope the government take note and act quickly, there's no reason why repealing an Act, or long list of Acts, should take more than a few minutes of Parliamentary time.

i don't care about any of that.
Shame, and there was me thinking you were sensible.

You don't like 4x4s because they are dangerous to other road users yet seem to think that violent drunks and drink driving is all fine and well!!
