The UAE is only slightly less medieval than its neighbours.

Remember that Sheikh Issa was found innocent of the infamous torture caught on video (judge said he was drugged and made to do it?!).

If there is justice for this guy's family, some poor lowly non-Emirati policeman will take the fall. frown

Come again ???? They can't have used it all up already. Had plenty in the 70s when I passed through a few times.
They produce around 50k barrels a day and its set to run out within 20 years.

Oil (and gas) accounts for very little of their overall economy.

In the UAE it is illegal to have sex outside of marriage.
Now there is something for unmarried couples to be aware of before visiting - it's certainly not something that I would have considered (the law, not the sex wink).

Isn't that one of the ten commandments anyway?

Well, if you can be locked up in Dubai for breaking any one of the ten commandments (seems odd for Muslim country?) then I would be really fcensoredcked:

- Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain
- Thou shalt honour the sabbath
- Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's goods

All well and good, but if you're an unmarried couple would you want to take the chance?

I imagine most westerners would be pretty keen to avoid the inside of a Dubai prison, which would in turn give locals who come across evidence of you "playing around in your hotel room" some pretty good blackmail leverage?

From personal experience ....Yes.... as do most non-celibate unmarried couples in the Emirates.

To be honest the locals have far better things to be doing.

Can't see what all the fuss is about, to be honest.

What if it was your sister or mother he dragged around in a drunken rage, trying to throw her down 6 storeys? Would you feel the same way? Sucks to be him as a simple headkicking went too far, but he brought it upon himself, and maybe this will be a lesson to other chavs who thinks they can behave as they like. Keep the vomit in your own country.

If you want to have sex in Dubai, and do it behind closed doors, nobody cares.

Yes, a slightly odd thread. I've been to Dubai, numerous times and with my girlfriend, and had no problems at all and a great holiday.

The facts of this case are not that clear at present, with official reports needing independent examination. It is interesting to observe that Dubai does mirror the fortune of other de novo resorts, like Las Vegas, built on a seedy underbelly, and exploitation.

I wonder how he afforded to stay in the Burj for the nights he was staying there, let alone how many nights he was due to stay there for.

I have visited Dubai 6 times, and my brither has lived there for 14 years and neither of us have ever seen intense activity in the customs hall. Indeed its unusual for more than 1 person to be there, so why these people get caught with 1 grain of drug is beyond my comprehension.

As someone else has said the general rule appears to be that as long as you dont bring yourself to the attention of the authorities you can do almost what you like. However if you do attract the attention of the authorities then be prepared to answer them civilily, dont go saying "I'm British you cant touch me" etc.

Well, sort of but not really. Like everything else in the UAE, there's a racist and religious dimension at play.

The Western tourists that pay for Dubai's gaudy hotels are treated one way. The much higher number of poorer 'guests' from the East don't have quite the same blind-eye turned. As many a poor maid finds out the hard way (meaning lashes doled out for adultery after she drops an out-of-wedlock sprog.)

And when an important-enough Emirati sleeps with a Western woman, nobody cares (as you say). But what do you think happens if his sister does the same with a Western man?

Despite all that gold, mirror and marble, Dubai is living proof that you can't polish a turd. (Although you can get just enough shine to fool some people.)

The only consistency there is that this hypocrisy/moral conduct is widespread amongst Arabs - whether they have oil/riches or not. It's their way....

Didn't you know? In the same way that all Christians are bible thumping nutters, all arabs are wife beating, sandal throwers. People who say this know, because they've worked in the area for many years, rather than garner that opinion via the media.

No, of course not ALL. Would you chance a liaison with an unmarried Arab girl? Or would you feel "safer" with a native? Their values/expectations/ways are different.

Not ALL smile but are you saying their women enjoy the same freedom/privileges as in the West. And what about their domestic servants?
