Had a belter from my mate upon seeing a few union flags at Ascot Saturday

"I didn't realise it was that sort of place"

So I said, "What in Britain, or the Queen's racecourse?"

I'll just add this to the list of absurd things said by supposedly intelligent friends/ partners/ colleagues in the name of liberalism which I've previously catalogued here, or in other threads, to the disbelief of members who cried 'troll' because the left seemingly don't like views they disagree with, or hearing about the ignorance and intolerance of their comrades.

Similar to "There were a lot of St George's flags" which was a middle class girl's review of a Working Man's Club my boss apparently overheard in the lift.
Cool story, but it's one in the name of you having dim mates rather than anything else
Please don't try to make this personal when the ignorance and intolerance of the Left, people I voluntarily associate with or otherwise, is allowed to flourish under the guise of being for the greater good against such evils as displaying a flag. I've never even met Emily Thornberry.

The Red Army Faction which was dissolved 21 years ago? Interestingly that link tells me that founding member Horst Mahler is now a vocal neo-Nazi and Holocaust denier.
Neatly proving what I've always said: the Far right are closer ideologically to the far left than the centre right.

You'd be more surprised if he'd morphed into a One Nation Tory, let's face it. hehe

What did he mean by "that sort of place"?

Did he think it was some kind of BNP/EDL rally?
That was the inference.
The man’s a moron.
hehe

Don't mince your words.

You can't band those sorts of opinions about without someone coming along and being grievously offended on behalf of someone else (even if they know nothing about them) these days.

I happen to agree with you though.

You're the one suggesting that your mate embodies some sort of strawman intolerance that you've cooked up in your head.

When was anyone ever prevented from displaying a flag for the reasons that you suggest?

Oh, you're baiting me in to citing cases where companies have allegedly forbidden St George's flags, or they have been removed from outside council offices etc.

I've no idea whether these are genuine examples but it's only a small step on from expressing ones contempt for those who display a flag, an example of ignorance and intolerance you're failing to dispute, condemn, or justify, even the one in the public domain which itself elicited an apology.

I think people may be mistaking left/right wing for authoritarianism/liberalism.

You can be a jolly mellow person with either left or right wing economic and/or social ideas, or you can be an authoritarian nut-job with either left or right wing economic and/or social ideas.

Politics is a lot more than left or right.

But is "far right" a sub-sector of "right" or a separate thing? smile

Dunno, where does he stand on fiscal policy, labour rights and the ownership of the means of production?

I'm happy to go for "utter scumbag".

No he’s right wing.
If that was true wouldn't I agree with him a bit on some stuff?

I'm sort of middle-of-the-Tories right wing, and I bet I wouldn't share a single political view with him. If we were both simply right wing but me less so, wouldn't I just sort of half agree with all his opinions?

Sporky's comment about five up is very accurate.

You sound like one of those blokes who's joined a car forum with a big right wing chip on your shoulder to express daily outrage and offence at trivial stuff that has pretty much zero bearing on your life and, in the case of flags getting banned, you don't even know if it's true (it isn't)

You're clutching at straws a bit with your story about your mate at a racecourse IMO, but do carry on.

I don't think it makes anyone a monster if they share a vague sense of economic conservatism with a proven dicklord, so I wouldn't worry if you did. Also I am not saying that you do have anything in common with him.

I'm slightly left of centre and fairly Liberal (in the not-authoritarian sense) but I think the Green Party (who are darned close on the political compass) have become dangerous nut jobs. From my point of view we are utterly different. Even with left/right and auth/lib matching you can be very different.

Hitler started out in a party with socialist members, and then killed off all the socialists. The only things we sort of know he was into from the start was a hatred of certain peoples, and chose the easiest way into power

I'm no great history buff, but I'd suggest that Hitler's defining political characteristic was authoritarianism.

Also I don't think it's reaching to suggest that he was a true Dicklord-Prime.

authoritarianism and some sort of quasi-aryan best philosophy.
