Something like 90 Conservative PPC's are vacant as of today. This suggests a scramble to fill vacancies with perfunctory vetting & I'm willing to risk a guess we will see in due course a bunch of hurriedly selected loonies with horrific social media histories outed a la Reform. You're gonna need a bigger popcorn factory.
Telegraph are reporting the number of Tory MPs standing down at the election has risen to 75, matching the record set during John Major's tenure in 1997.

They also published a rather fetching photo of Sunak:

Rishi watching his election campaign go to pieces so quickly that he needs eye protection.

Blimey,

Was he awake during the campaign at all?

It was disastrous, negative and gaff-ridden and she lost by a bigger margin than the Bailey campaign but apparently it's to be considered a role model?

Yeah, crack on with that lads.

I liked this in the comments (which in general aren't positive).

Quite right. "Vote for policies that will give your children asthma" has to be a winning slogan.

I get the impression that she was pitching to voters outside London, who obviously couldn't vote for her, but with the aim of setting something up for the GE. London is quickly becoming a Labour stronghold so there is an argument (which I disagree with) that they should just give up on it and use the mayoral elections to grandstand rather than aim to win.

Really? That'll be two Tory PM's falling victim to an iceberg then.

Don't you think humans are pretty adept at sensing those who try and fake it? If a politician is glib, they might not get obviously tripped up by the 'football' or the 'pub' type questions/situations, but my sense is people know intuitively when those types of politicians are being insincere and shallow.

So I'd go with the Penguin, and say he is better presenting himself in a straightforward way, even if that means he looks a bit awkward at times. I also think most people have a good idea of Sunak's strengths and weaknesses. What isn't so clear is the government's plan for the next 5 years.
The success of Johnson and Blair I'd say kind of shows it's just a question of being better at glibness and putting on that act of chumminess though rather than people being all that adept at sensing that.....? Well either that or if it's done well enough even if people did sense it's a charade being faked they don't seem to mind all that much. Not entirely sure if the latter is even worse but.....

According to the BBC Sunak's motorcade was rushed by protestors in the Midlands this afternoon. Security might be an issue for quite a few Tory campaigners this time round. A lot of them will be new to the game as the Tories are abandoning ship in large numbers, constituting 75 out of the 118 who have so far said they won't be standing again.

I regret to inform you looking comfortable in factories is not a prerequisite of a statesman...but IKWYM. smile

Wider point I suppose is what do you expect them to do in an election? They have to be seen to be out & about, the problem for Sunak's advisors is he is so visibly dislocated when prised from his private jets & plonked into the midst of the plebs. They really should be thinking hard about this stuff & it's not as if it's a surprise to anyone.

I continue to be amazed that more is not made of that particular PR stunt. It is his bacon sandwich.

I mean, just how disconnected from everyday life do you have to be to not understand how a chip and pin card works?

It flags up that, like the Queen (King?), he just doesn't have to deal with money. It is of such little concern to him that he doesn't know how to tender it in the physical real word.

So the plan is to alienate the people who can elect you in the vain hope some other people who can't might remember your name in a few years and vote for you then? Apart from being a crap plan I'm struggling with how it can be extrapolated across the nation.

I'm not sure he realises how much he's hated.

In fact I'm certain he's as oblivious about that as he is about living in the UK on an average wage.

They all see which way the winds blowing and don’t fancy being embarrassed in six weeks.

Will the be enough highly paid board places to go around?

Or are we going to have a special I’m an Ex-Tory MP Get Me Out Of Here series this year?
