A newscaster I work with also has a quick chat with any contributers before we go live.

He says that they must remember that for many people watching around the world, English is their second language, especially Americans, so keep your answers short, plain and easy to understand.

Appreciate that this isn't unique to the USA but for a civilised nation there is a lot that seems quite astonishing about the laws there.
There's your problem...
Reminds me of a time when my wife told one of her friends, “Frank really enjoyed Australia, but to me it was like a civilised version of America”

That sounds a bit like a dry ocean.

Lockdown ended here last week anndddd

https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/20/us/westgate-arizona...

PHOENIX — A shooting at Westgate Entertainment District Wednesday night has left multiple victims in need of medical treatment, authorities said.

I was there before the lockdown. But saying you were near/close/went to where a mass shooting took place doesn't really carry any water with the yanks, as just about everyone has been, or was near, a shooting : /

We sold our small co to a bigger USA outfit.

500 consultants and support staff across 25 countries. HQ in Chicago.

Most consultants had run successful a business prior to acquisition (some came up through the company as well or headhunted from relevant companies), MBAs etc etc.

I was at our yearly global meeting in Chicago. Sat next to two chaps from the Florida office. Nice enough guys; interesting discussion but they kept moaning about not being able to bring their handguns to Chicago...not allowed, apparently.

We are sat in the Chicago Natural History Museum which holds functions like these in the evenings, smartly dressed, watching awards being given out, state of company, speeches etc etc. I was thinking 'why the hell would you need a gun to come to something like this?!?'

The Florida office is very nice, I met some of their support staff; not a dangerous looking bunch.

One of them came to UK the next year and being a nice guy I said I'd meet him at his hotel on arrival...then take him into office; he wanted to try our famous tube but was a bit worried about getting lost.

The topic that kept coming up repeatedly....yep, ridiculous he couldn't bring his gun with him!

He was staying in that hot bed of crime; Park Lane (we had very generous expenses).

I was a bit fed up with all this..why was he so frighted that he needed to carry a gun? Not frightened just prepared.

What if he or colleagues went a bit crazy. Not him he's a good guy, best to be prepared for bad guys.

Gave an example of an incident where I was a good guy who became in seconds a bad guy and the bad guys perhaps, in USA, could have shot me as they might have seen themselves at that point as the 'good guys'. Depends entirely on perceptions and your moral code who is good or bad in that instance.

Well that one was confusing but his view was that if neither party knew if the other was carrying a gun or not it would have not got to that point.

Oh, so no one gets into fights or shoots other people because no one knows if they have a gun or not, crime and murder must be incredibly low in USA then?

Errrr.

Bright guy but kept coming back to same arguments.

Its just so ingrained in some of their culture - its like trying to argue with a Christian; facts, logic, rational arguments, history all go out the window in support of the their cause.

I just can''t see how this would ever be solved.

Can't remember if I chucked in that you must be so scared of your countrymen that you think your own armed forces - who are all heroes thank you for your service - would at the government's behest turn on their own people.... That one usually doesn't go down well.

Not really. In response to an event where illegally held guns were used in a shooting, they're going to ban legally held guns. Canada has a definite gun problem - it's almost entirely down to already criminalized guns, and no attempt is being made to control them.

This is entirely Trudeau trying to look good without doing anything useful.
No attempt? So the police don't arrest them or track down suppliers, like in the UK?

Gangs are not targeted? No specialised units looking at this sort of thing?

Seems somewhat unlikely?

.....federal government announced approximately $327.6 million over five years, starting in 2018–19, and $100 million annually thereafter, in new federal funding to tackle the increase in gun related violence and gang activity in Canada. This initiative will bring together federal, provincial and territorial efforts to support community-level prevention and enforcement efforts, build and leverage unique federal expertise and resources to advance intelligence related to the illegal trafficking of firearms, and invest in border security to interdict illicit goods including guns....

Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth told The New York Times his office is investigating whether the shooting resulted from a conflict between demonstrators and a group of men with weapons who were protecting businesses.

Seven people were killed in a shooting at an illegal marijuana-growing operation in Southern California that local authorities say bears the hallmarks of organized crime.

Riverside County sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call Monday morning about an assault with a deadly weapon and shots fired. When they arrived at the large property in the remote mountain area of Aguanga, they found six people dead of gunshot wounds. A seventh person later died at a local hospital.

Two people have died after a shooting at a party in the city of Rochester, New York state.
Fourteen other people were injured in the incident, which comes after unrest in the city following the suffocation death of Daniel Prude while he was arrested by police.

We rarely get to hear (and be regularly reminded of) the names of the numerous white men USA police shoot on a regular basis. Odd that!

Isn't one of the benefits of legalising whatever drug that the crime surrounding the supply of it will disappear?

Mostly there still some crime around the supply of fags for under the counter sales, but it's mostly criminals trying to get one over each other.
