Great news if true.... Russian assets that are incredibly difficult to replace.
Is there anything larger than a tugboat left in the BSF?

I hadn't realised how big the bsf was pre war. Lots of medium and small ships. Maybe 70 or so, now there's about 45 ish left.

Tu-95/Tu-22s in the air and heading for launch boxes. Also several groups of Shaheds inbound to Ukraine. Sunday is "Kyiv Day" so it's possible the Capital is the main target.

Interesting piece in the Guardian from Polands foreign minister:

“He was sceptical about Russian threats to use nuclear weapons, saying: “The Americans have told the Russians that if you explode a nuke, even if it doesn’t kill anybody, we will hit all your targets [positions] in Ukraine with conventional weapons, we’ll destroy all of them.

“I think that’s a credible threat. Also, the Chinese and the Indians have read Russia the riot act. And it’s no child’s play because if that taboo were also to be breached, like the taboo of not changing borders by force, China knows that Japan and Korea would go nuclear, and presumably they don’t want that.””

So we all knew the Russian nuclear propaganda was bulls**t but this just confirms it.
Agreed. As is to underline the various hazards, the B52 that’s just taken off from UK this morning, flying into the Baltic.

Russia are quadruple fked if they even so much as just fart a bit nuclear.
Excuse my ignorance here. Say they do explode a nuke in Ukraine, I presume it would be a non-nuclear reaction from the US/Nato? But it would wipe out their ability to launch further ones.

Say, that happens. Would it then be Putin in hiding and being found cowering in a mud shack like most dictators

I believe NATO would destroy all Russian troops and equipment in Ukraine. I don't know if it includes Crimea. There would be no attacks in Russia.

Plus you immediately get Russia's long term strategic nightmare as all nations that border Russia either get nukes, or get NATO nukes on their soil. So nuclear Poland, nuclear Turkey etc.

If Russia opens the nuclear pandoras box any nation near them that likes its borders where they are will need nuclear protection.

Let alone the stance nuclear nations that have border issues with Russia (i.e. China) will be forced to take.

The downsides to Russia massively, massively outweigh any benefit from a show of force to Ukraine.

I don’t think a nuclear attack on Ukraine would be countered with a nuclear response.

I am under no doubt a conventional response would be immediate, sustained and commited by more countries than just the US.

Russia’s allies would keep quiet and not rock the boat as I think even they would think it a step too far(excepting North Korea and possibly Iran)

Can’t remember who it was that was interviewed but the expected response would be the unit that deployed the Nuclear missile would be destroyed with conventional forces….which would be inside Russia. Taking out 500k Russian soldiers in Ukraine would probably result in WW III. If they did that Russia has pretty much no army left so the only thing they would have left would be more nuclear weapons.

The reality is probably that the intelligence in terms of knowing where the nuclear capable forces are and monitoring of communications is such that if the order did get given the unit involved quite possibly wouldn’t get the chance to carry it out. I’d imagine there is a B52 with a load of Tomahawk’s stationed somewhere in Europe ready to go.

That is total fantasy. Nobody is interdicting a nuclear site within Russia. If it was mobile they wouldn’t find it.

Massive conventional strike on Russian equipment in Ukraine is highly likely. Doesn’t need to be killing 500k troops just the high end hardware.

I don't think that the threat re use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine is new. I'm pretty sure that the US sent the same message last year.

The response would be a meeting of the security council followed by a vote where the action would be condemned by all who voted and some would choose not to vote. Nothing else would happen.

Joe Bloggs video on the driving factors behind Putin considering calling it a day.

Heard it all before at this stage, though.

Nope, I think the US would act independently of anything the UN Security Council came up with - possibly with a coalition, but they'd act nonetheless.

Sending a message to Russia that they can use nuclear weapons is a complete non starter.

Poland has already asked for nuclear weapons to be based in their country.
