And yet wealthy arab states are full of ex-pats, earning more money there than they couldn't in a lifetime here.

(edited for your presumed meaning)

Yup - if you can turn a blind eye to the other st around you, there's a decent living to be had. Until you p1ss off the wrong local.

pretty much. I had a residency Visa for Saudi, and got on fine. Respect the local laws, and you're good.

Local laws do not equal justice. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Issa_bin_Zayed_Al_Nah... - found innocent, curiously. (I won't post a link to the torture video itself for obvious reasons.)

The truth is that expats pretty quickly develop a double standard. They'll quite happily accept the instituionally racist salaries (thank you very much). And at parties in Jumeirah, they laugh as they swap tales about the unfair nonsense meted out to some poor sap they know.

But all the while thanking their lucky stars that they're not (yet?) on the receiving end.

He didnt mention anything about justice, just respecting the local laws and how they apply to him.

Thanks DJC. I personally never had a problem. Covered up tattoos, wore long pants, and kept any religious stuff out of view, (not that I had any!)... It's quite easy to just get by, do your thing, and not have any bother.

No, of course not ALL. Would you chance a liaison with an unmarried Arab girl? Or would you feel "safer" with a native? Their values/expectations/ways are different.
Oh so it is all of them. No surprises.

I know, and I'm explaining that corruption and make-it-up-as-we-go-along enforcement makes it risky to rely on the UAE's local laws.

But while the living's good, most expats don't worry. I know that.

If you lie down with dogs then you'll get up with fleas. I got headhunted for the CFO role at a regional stock exchange in the ME and I declared zero-interest without even hearing the numbers.

Oh FFS does some of PH never step away from the PC in their bedroom?

Corruption & make-it-up-as-we-go-along is the norm for most of the world. Hell the make it up enforcement is the norm in the UK if you believe most posts on SP& L.. Having been in & out of the UAE, most of the middle east, India & Africa for most of the last 20yrs I find some of the xenophobia on here stunning & right out of the Daily Mail.

Oh dear; someone doesn't share your world view and you get bent out of shape? It's nothing to do with xenophobia. I've lived and worked in Dubai. It's the most backward and racist place I've ever known. I still have a good friend there (not everyone can come and go quite as easily as you or me - as you well know).

If you can compare the situation in Dubai with that in Britain, your moral compass has been borked by too much expattery. (It happens.)

Is it really that racist though or are they tring to make sure that their own nationals get a good deal too?

I heard from a couple of sources the same thing out there...

Nothing about a person being threatened with a 6 storey fall, etc.

He went outside and wanted to have his picture taken with the local exotic cars and instead of standing in front of it he decided to jump on the said car and want his picture taken whilst drunk...

Got dragged off and beaten by bouncers and then died on his own vomit in jail.

Some of this was coming from contacts who have friends in the UK embassy out there.

Waiting to hear if this is the case, but I suspect it will be a long time before that is ever released if true.

Why don't you go there and find out? 60 years should do it.

Not at all. I don't think I've ever disputed these things go on, they do. They go on in Dubai, Abu Dhabi & most other places of the world. My point was more that people should not close their eyes to what goes on in most of the world & think it's only the "evil" Arabs that do it. The norm is for foreigners to be picked on. The rough pecking order is always the same Westerners less likely, Easterners more likely. I'm not in any way defending this merely saying it is the norm. In the middle east it is Arab 1st, Westerner 2nd, others are so insignifcant they are not worthy of a ranking.

Like it or not life is cheap in much of the world and this impacts on how people are treated depending on their nationality. Indians in the Middle East are not treated well & in some ways are no better than slaves, however see how they can be treated in India itself by fellow Indians. The worst living conditions I have ever seen have been on Indian construction sites. Safety is non-existent and the loss of life is an irrelevance.

I also was not comparing the situation in Dubai with that in the UK, again merely pointing out how many fabricated & trumped up charges people in SP&L seem to suffer with even in the UK. Most of these are frankly unbelieveable but if you were to believe them you could assume the UK was as bad as Dubai in this resect!smile
