Waiting an hour in driving rain for a late, piss soaked Community Bus and sharing the journey with unwashed drunk wasters and shoplifters to travel at walking pace to a shopping centre car park to be disgorged onto the flooded tarmac. The return journey is the same but with heavy bags in tow and the wasters are violent as well as more drunk.

I’m minded of a quite nondescript town about 10 miles from me, Dereham.

It’s got a high street quite full of all sorts of shops; craft, hardware, cafes, opticians other than Specsavers, banks, you name it.

There’s a library, computer/phone repair place, jewellers and the ubiquitous Greggs.

It’s busy most of the time, certainly every weekday and Saturday.

There are two big, (one very big) car parks. They’re regularly quite full.

All parking is free.

That's surprisingly honest for a... Oh, wait.

That's also why I drove to Westfield today and cheerfully paid £9 to park.

Why are shoplifters going to use the bus ?

Surely better to take the car then you've got somewhere to dump your stolen goods before stealing more .

I've found out today that Carluccios in Nottingham city centre is closing imminently. It's in an area where lots of shops are closed. It's a shame, because it was actually alright.

Don’t get me going on Westfields. Rank place. If the one I’ve been in is anything to go by it’s like third world country and it’ll herald be the death of the shopping centres that were the death of town centres.

Are you referring to Westfield Stratford ?

I asked because I stayed about 2 years ago in the Holiday Inn in the one at Stratford for work and found it a very odd place. My colleague and I went to central London every night, coming back at about 10 or 11 and were amazed at people wondering round a closed shopping centre at that time of night. It was very strange to us both.

Last 4 words is what gives a high street a chance.

Not neccesarily
If there are two tiny car parks - free all day, they'll be full of the last remaining shop workers

Yes, shops need customers and staff. News at 11.

I will admit it is a tricky one.

At the moment though, being in the EU, if we tax them more than they would be taxed in say Luxembourg, they will trade out of there for all UK sales and we will see nothing.
That is already happening.

My understanding is that the UK operation merely delivers the products ordered through the Luxemburg company.

Dereham is essentially an oasis in the middle of, frankly, not very much. It's slap bang in the middle of Norwich and King's Lynn, both being ~35 min drive away.

There has to be these incentives otherwise relatively few people would go there! Well, no one would go to Lynn in any case but you get the idea.

Seemed full of beggars and streets paved with trodden chips last time I was there.

I popped into Dereham for the first time in years yesterday, I was cutting through from the A47 back to Wymondham and thought I would pop into Argos to get a one for all remote for a soundbar I have lost the remote for.

It could be such a nice town if only a few decent stores went into the centre.
But I guess they are aiming at the demographic who are there now, and to be honest they all looked a bit more Paul Calf than Paul Smith in the way they dressed and behaved.

But the town could be gorgeous and a real destination spot if had the right coffee shops, restaurants and shops there.

It was the free and easy parking that got me to stop.
