Totally agree.

That's assuming it was a case of escaped dogs creating mayhem. The alternative is not particularly pleasant to consider.
I used to think that, and then this happened to people I know well:

That's sick, but £2k for a lamb?Is that to eat it or marry it?
I assume these lambs have golden fleece, that seems about ~10x the going rate.

I'd guess he meant someone was doing it on purpose for whatever reason that might have been letting a dog (or dogs) loose around livestock.
A farm near my Mother`s house on Exmoor lost a few sheep recently. From witnesses it seems like someone driving past decided to stop and let their dogs out for a run in a field full of sheep. The car wasn't local, so assume someone passing through and you really have to hope they either didn't see the sheep, or their dogs got off their leads. It seems after killing a couple of sheep and badly injuring a few more, the chap managed to get his dogs back in the car and drive off. Needless to say, the locals are on the look out for the car returning.

in fairness to the farmer maybe he is accounting for his time, opportunity cost, admin, etc. I would. Hope they catch the owners, hit em with a big bill and also put their dogs down.

£2k a lamb? This week I bought a 3kg joint of lamb for £45. So those lambs must weight 133kg each then.

A 4" paw print is fking huge isn't it? what sort of dog is that?
Paws will spread in mud.
You see prints that size.
Out in the muddy fields this morning and measured my Rottie's front prints. On firm mud 3.5" and on saturated mud 4". So, as said, not necessarily a monster dog.

Agree but why shouldn't the farmer be compensated fully? He should lay it on thick. Maybe it was 2k for all the lambs and its a misprint, but its odd to pick on that specifically as if its the farmer thats the bad guy. No, its the owner of those dogs who is at fault isn't it?

Agreed, plus sheep trigger a chase response in some otherwise placid dogs. I have seen labs attack sheep before. In my experience, you're also far less likely to see these trophy dogs in rural environments being properly exercised. Plenty of sheep attacks are carried by dogs owned by what most of us would regard as respectable owners. I suspect even when an owner sees it, or is aware something's happened, the inclination is to leg it and hope to remain undetected, just like people who prang cars when parking and don't fess up.

Plus, dead lambs lay no eggs. Farming Fact.

The punishment on this one will demonstrate how serious the govt are taking it.

If they are pedigree sheep, rams are pretty valuable, and of course ewes can produce more sheep, so the value isn't limited to the value of a lamb sold for slaughter

There's also the cost of disposal. It can't go into the human food chain and neither can he just throw the carcass into a ditch any more than the farmer can stick it in the wheelie bin.

Now what are the chances this XL was registered and neutered? Obviously not wearing the obligatory muzzle.

At this rate, the police will be destroying all the remaining ones, not vets.

Sentencing needs to be ramped up to make some examples of the scum failing to follow the law. The usual factors applied in sentencing are incidental (victim impact etc). Once the dog loses it's st, no-one is in control and it's luck as to the consequences.

Yep… like I posted above, this isn’t the owners it is the dog.

A large number will have the genetic defect which is leading to these attacks. The majority of the dogs in this country have been in-bred from fighting line and are highly reactive.

The majority of the owners won’t understand this, and no amount of training to “out”, “leave”, “drop”, “give” etc won’t work once it enters this phase.. The dogs brain has a defect and is wired wrong. This will continue to happen, unless the dog is muzzled.

Another one shot by police in Scotland. 3 people injured and a Collie attacked.

And another one shot dead, this time in Hamilton in Scotland after it attacked a man and then the owner. Apparently rescued just 2 weeks before.

Indeed.

And muzzles in public places. Preferably for all dogs. They need to stop fking about now.

Interesting that it took 4 rounds to stop the dog. It must have been really hyped to take that much lead.
