It is harder employers are much more picky they now have a very tight ask list and rather than taking punts on people they now really are not.
I've noticed this myself, I essentially sit in and sift through applications for vacancies where I work but don't have final say on who gets the job. We had one for a basic typing and filing type job from a young lad, I think he was about 24-25 judging by his school leaving dates (so not much younger than me) who had never had a job but wrote an excellent application. It was better written than the more experienced candidates and due to my protest he was interviewed, I liked him but he was passed up due to his lack of experience. It was a box ticking exercise (oh look at us we interviewed someone with no experience) which I feel about now because he was only interviewed to shut me up, I do hate it when people get false hope.It took a few days to pick someone and he rang up everyday asking if we'd made a decision, he clearly wasn't stupid but somebody else was picked. I do worry about people like that because if nobody gives them a chance they'll be living with their parents at 40. It was scary for me because I left school with nothing and somebody took a punt on me, I think if I was a school leaver today I could become someone like him.
Positively frightening.
I think it must also be said that there are more chances for jobs in certain geographic areas whilst some others have a very low chance.
I'm thinking sadly most of Wales and the North of England. Clearly the answer is for those who seriously want to work to relocate to where there is work. I know for some it's just not possible to move but for others they should give it a try.
Finally if there is no work for you currently then gain another qualification and I'm talking a professional one be it plumber sparky plastering etc something totally different to your current field of work. It may result in employment in that area but it also shows to everyone your trying so hard to ensure you get employment. Also some of these skills could save you a lot of money come DIY time.
I'd love to have those skills but am st at them.

Watch out! The attitude police will be after you.In a sense, they would be right too. Anyone who has enough physical ability to tie his shoelaces and enough sense and learning ability to do so has all that is needed to take up a trade such as the ones you mention.
Look at the people who already do those jobs if you want examples.
I, too, have an interview. On Friday! I got knocked back for a role I thought I was perfect for, looking at the job spec. I e-mailed for some feedback and got this e-mail...
"Hi Paul
Thank you for contacting us about your recent application. I have had another look at your CV and also discussed this with the recruiting manager. Unfortunately it is not clear why you were originally declined and I can only pass on my apologies. Having reviewed your details against the criteria for the role, I can see that you do have some of the qualities and experience we are looking for.
I have forwarded your details on to my colleague Tania who will be in touch to arrange an interview with you shortly."
"some of"!?! Cheeky mare!
I'm well chuffed. Seems like a great employer.

That was my initial though but then I remembered it was a junior post (unless its in London? Dunno how things rate down there). It's not asking for rafts of degrees/experience/industry awards, just 'some' experience. That's unusual enough these days, most adverts you see ask for the freakin' Yoda of the field for £3/hour.

God I hate adverts with that sort of twaddle in it. A paragraph full of buzzwords which doesn't actually say anything.Gassing Station | News, Politics & Economics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
