I'll "somewhat" defend The Donald here. I don't think he is racist, I personally think he couldn't give a diddly fk about such things beyond: "what can I get out of this transaction?" Transaction here being any communication.
Trump is a cynical egomaniac opportunist. Nothing more, nothing less. Black folk are much more unlikely to vote for him therefore they are irrelevant. Null if you like. Actively appearing to favour attitudes likely to be against said ppl he judges will garner him votes amongst a demographic he majors in.

It's all a transactional deal. He doesn't care per se how normal folks care about such things, it's just part of the game to him.

That qualifies him far more for Derek's description of him than an accusation of racism in my humble.
