If they are genuine asylum seekers, they won't have risked travelling through 10 countries to get here. You only do that because you want to be in the UK, not because you fear for your life.
Ok so lets say you are from Angola. You have a job on a cargo ship. You get information that should you return to Angola you'll be killed because your brother had sex with a witch while you were at sea. The ships next port of call is the UK before returning to Angola.

Would you like the UK to take a quick look at your situation and see if we'll let you stay. Or just point blank say "no go away"?

I'm sure someone has a better grasp of the numbers, but their are plenty of asylum seekers throughout europe.

We'd have to look at this. Well founded fear, and we're the first safe place.

I thought I'd already made it clear that I don't have a problem with people seeking asylum here when they don't have to travel through other safe countires to do so. After this chap got the bad news, the UK was his first and only stop so that's fine. If he gets the same info while docked in France but waits until he gets to the UK to claim asylum, I don't believe his claim.

What's British then? I'm second generation.. is that far back enough? 3rd? 4th?
You'd pass me in the street and not look twice as I'm white, yet Mr Singh down the road, whose familiy has probably been here longer than mine, you would tell them to get out of 'your' country.

Sigh.

It's not being 'political'. It's representative of a lot of people's views. I get people moaning to me about immigration; I point out that I come from an immigrant family (and yes, ALL of it, all grandparents, are non UK) in the 50's and get a 'yeah, but.. you're like us' i.e. 'white'. It's just disguised racism, pure and simple.

Look at a map of the globe! The only legitimate asylum seekers in England are the Welsh and Scots.
And they should only be allowed to stay if they learn the language and customs.

The thong I don't get is that we don't have any countries bordering us that would have people who genuinely need asylum from, (except Scotland, and maybe Wales), so the question I always end up asking is why do they bypass all sorts of countries to get here? If it's the flight they happen to be on as a last gasp or something, fine. But traveling by truck over 20 countries, and getting to the UK, and asking for asylum seems disingenuous.

Reminds me of a recent business trip to the midlands. I ended up staying near Evesham and wandered into town to find a curry. Being on my own I got talking to the guy who owned the curry house and he started ranting about all the Poles invading the place and taking the jobs and opening Polish shops everywhere. I congratulated him on his complete integration into British culture. smile

Apologies, you are correct - it wasn't intended to be a dig at you but more at this sort of attitude. It really fks me off, as it gets passed off as a joke or whatever when it is not funny. The implicit implication is that British - white, especially when you then mention the BNP.
Again, apologies, I do not want to accuse you of something you may or may not be - but this is the internet after all wink

Its common knowledge the UK is the goal for any asylum seeker. They will tell you themselves.

Its not the asylum seekers fault, its it Britains fault. I'd do exactly the same if i lived in a 3rd world country.

A common route from the middle east is through Greece, even through france. Why do they not stop and set up a new life there? Because britain will offer far more to them that any other country.

That would be one european agreement i'd like to see passed - equal asylum offerings.

Of course, the thing to realise as well is that asylum seekers will generally be non UE citizens (as an EU citizen you have the right to be here - as the spanish have found out to their cost with the brits!) and therefore by their very nature be culturally far different than the European norm.

To be honest, what caused the problem was your apparent support of the BNP - which, apart from being a joke party, is no joke.

As for why the UK is popular, I think that the English language has a lot to do with it. Many people have English as a second or third language so going somewhere where English is spioken makes that place attractive.

Having said that, Italy, France and Germany all have their immigration problems too. Britain is not unique in Europe.
