East Coast Hurricane

Been through a few Hurricanes in my time here, we're only really at the 'start' proper of Hurricane season...Sept is always the busiest month. Worst one we've had recently was Fabian (Strong Cat 3) when 4 people lost their lives unfortunately, trying to cross the causeway here.
Not sure what's worse though - the Hurricane or Jim Cantore turning up
Flew with Jim once before, a short little fart he is. I always wondered why he rarely is filmed next to anyone. On your point, where he goes, the storm usually follows! Not sure what's worse though - the Hurricane or Jim Cantore turning up

These all live in the underground tunnels in NY. And they'll be wanting to not drown...
This is the type advice the officials may be too busy to think of. Water = mosquitoes and rats. Stock up on medicines for West Nile Virus, rabies, tetnas, etc. These all live in the underground tunnels in NY. And they'll be wanting to not drown...

I'd be more worried about the 3ft-wide spider than was eating the rat when the bloke killed it.These all live in the underground tunnels in NY. And they'll be wanting to not drown...

This is going to be a water thing, notstrong enough for wind damage on a large scale. Still, not being used to such things, it has the potential to be messy in a tight place, especially the city.
I was surprised by footage of the beaches at New York on the BBC, loads of poor quality high rises right on the shore - they are going to get hit hard. Here's a fun website.
http://geology.com/sea-level-rise/new-york.shtml
It's designed for sea level rise but it'll give you an idea of what will happen with a storm surge. A 3 metre surge, for example, will flood JFK. The added problem is that New York is only a couple of days off a spring tide, which adds 2 and a half metres to the storm surge. 5 metres will be a very bad flood indeed for Brooklyn.
We're moving everything out of the basement and have been told to expect at least 50mph plus sustained winds for around 20 hours, we're not far from New York and I've not heard that it's just going to be a gale...Quite worried in all honesty, more about trees coming down, falling debris and the STUPID electric system that has the power lines running alongside trees. No doubt we'll lose power for a few days.

I do hope it's just gales in all honesty.

50mph is a strong gale on the Beaufort scale, it is something to be careful of but nothing to worry about too much. I would be more worried if I lived in low lying area due to possible flooding. im leaving manhatten tonight for palm beach, who would have thought i'd dodge a hurricane that way round? ny needs a good wash anyway
My friends just got to Palm beach yesterday and another friend is in Miami having left ny. After the earthquake this week it all seems a bit odd in the NYC area. I live in Hoboken NJ most of which is below river level. We have a Hugh water table from heavy rain over the last couple of weeks so they gave said we may get water up to the second floor (English first floor). They have also issued an evacuation order fir Hoboken and they are shutting all the bars. That really is a crisis.
I'm in Albany for the weekend where I will be swimming in the MIL's pool. I'm guessing that it's going to be stormy up here but not that bad

Would you prefer they flew you into the middle of a hurricane ?
I'd prefer them to know that the flight THEY re-booked me only a couple of hours ago is gonna go ahead, Sunday was always gonna be the worst day surely they must of known this...idiots!I ain't blaming them for the weather but their process for dealing with it is piss poor!

Well either way, I'd rather not be in it at all. The footage here is pretty grim viewing, stopped watching it now!Edited by Boozy on Saturday 27th August 17:45
