I'd guess you are wrong.

In my experience, "leading academics" don't have a clue about what's going on around them in the real world...

Ouch, that looks nasty.

Another example of why driving whilst being on the phone is a dumb idea. Her husband should be ashamed of himself too for talking to her knowing she was driving.

Completely wrong, I'm glad to say.

Back in the 80s I had a kit car with a chassis like the Caterham and a friend with the same car was hit at 30-40mph to the rear by a Post Office lorry whilst stopped, preparing to turn right.

The fibreglass body work was destroyed, but the chassis and driver were unharmed.

it's only a matter of time until one of these is involved in a fatal... (and they're not even insured)

Did anyone else read that and think it sounded like the husband was saying; "Well there you go, thats what happens if you don't wear your seatbelt and are on the phone..".

He seemed to come across very nonchalant..

Maybe its just me.
sounds like he is a scientist too.

he rightly pointed out that the vehicles are not as safe as cars, but that you need to bear this in mind when deciding to use them and when deciding how to use them.

he appears to have been able to remain objective despite the tragic accident that robbed him of his life and science of a good scientist (I didn't know this woman but used to work at imperial). lots of Gwizzes in their south ken campus.

leading academics live in the 'real world' too, just a different part of it.

infact they created the 'real world' for you... lasers, semiconducting electronics, computing, antibiotics, recombinant DNA for production of hormones, etc... all done by leading academics.

They should be introduced to risk assessment. Before they become extinct.

If she had been on a petrol powered vehicle i imagine a very different thread

If she had been in a petrol powered car there would be vigorous defending of driving while using a phone and without a seat belt

But she was in a G-wizz so she must be hated and must be in the wrong

What the hell???????

At the time of the accident she was on her mobile, not wearing a seatbelt and was judged to be COMPLETELY in the wrong.

Are you drunk or being deliberately provocative?

No one would defend someone who acted like that. Whatever vehicle they happened to be in at the time.

Silliest post of the day, IMO.

quite, also of course an 'academic' which we all know automatically means absent minded and dotty - actually it means deeply engaged with difficult intellectual challenges.

Not true, tubular lattice frame in a 7 is strong as- Ive side swiped a dry stone wall in one at 40 mph and walked away.

The article said she was rushing to her sons school. How do you rush anywhere in a G-Wiz?

By pottering about as the article also says those sheds are good for...

...Or just maybe by pulling out of junctions right in front of skodas while on the phone?

"imploded".

Did it really, Daily Wail?

It looks a lot like it split apart to me.

"Imploded" - Collapse or cause to collapse violently inward.

If she had been hit in a Nissan Leaf, which has been properly crash tested, she might have lived. Even without a seatbelt (although it probably beeps constantly if you aren't wearing one).

Precisely. Looking at it in the cold light of day, leading what - the charge over the cliff?

Sad story but with wrong cars being made for the wrong reasons and daft people (in any job) at the wheel, it's not likely to end well.

Fair enough, but the description as used in the media in circumstances like this will often have the test tube washer as a leading academic. Not entirely out of kilter these days as you (almost) need a PhD to get such a job.

Beyond that, the ivory tower dweller still exists, as I'm sure you will know.
