It's usually going to be drink/car related isn't it. I googled for crimes and this came up, quite recent.

I suppose as for the idiot thing, some of them get managers for their 'portfolio', so that means they're not complete idiots...If the manager does well I supposebiggrin

Really? Do you know how many footballers are in the league? Are you really saying they are all idiots? Get real. Can you find me an example of Leighton Baines being an idiot? Phil Jagielka? Tim Howard? Jack Rodwell? These are just from one team.
Who?

Personally I think the idiots are the fans who spend their benefit money making them rich men for playing a game.

If you are approaching a subject from a stance of ignorance, I suggest you don't advertise the fact. Would you say the same thing about every other sport with wealthy participans?

And in the last year we've had probably 10 incidents in the press of (alleged) criminal behaviour.

How does 0.4% compare to the criminality of the general population over the course of a year? Sounds quite high to me...
That would be 0.4% of the 18 to 30 yr old male population, rather than the population as a whole though wouldn't it?
Fair point! thumbup

I'm sure there ARE plenty of genuinely 'professional' footballers out there. But there's a significant minority who really do let it all go to their heads and are complete, egotistical, anti-social knobs. That they're role-models for a couple of million kids means nothing to them...

Wonder how many of the "footballers are all idiots" crowd on this thread would have lead a perfectly respectable life if they'd been taken out of school at 16, put into a highly competitive environment, given 5k a week at 18, 20k a week at 20 and 50k a week by the time they were 23.

Being handed loads of money wouldn't make me go out and vandalise cars.

That would be the preserve of the . Irrespective how much their weekly wage was.

yes

Money does not change a person's innate morals.

Being surrounded by a bunch of shallow, flash idiots who keep egging you on to do the same, in a situation where you HAVE to be part of a team with them - THAT may change a person's innate morals, to a degree...

...ergo it's "Football" overall that is at fault. Time to jail Sepp Blatter! wink

You forgot that they have to be in bed by ten most nights are told exactly what to eat and drink and all the other controls on their personal life.

Much like most other 'proper' professional sportsmen/athletes.

The difference with the Premiership is that they get paid utterly ridiculous sums of money, and get permanent press coverage, both of which make the weaker-minded think they're gods...

There not the first porfessional footballers to be nicked are they? Barely a week passes without one of them getting locked up for something, normally much more serious than criminal damage!

And no, I don't read the snail. smile
There are 92 professional football league clubs, and a number of full time professional clubs lower down the pyramid.

Lets say on average there are 100 full time clubs in the English leagues. 20 more in the Welsh leagues, and 25 or 30 in Scotland.

Each club has a sqaud of first team professionals, for the sake of simplicity lets say that they have 25 each (some have more some less), and then the players who play in the youth set ups of clubs numbering a similar amount per team. Then there are all the professional womens teams that I haven't started counting.

Using those simple maths there are at least 7500 professional footballers. Now having not met all of them I can't be sure but I am certain more are sensible than are idiots.

Consider also that many 1000s of people that inhabit this fair island are bitter and jealous that some men get paid very well for essentially playing a game a couple of times a week. Then consider the media loves knocking people and how many footballers do you think have their entire life documented by the media compared to welders, factory workers, or IT workers?

Because of the national obsession with attacking footballers it stands to reason that it looks like most of them are idiots. If you read beyond the headlines and meet a few of them you will probably discover a couple of things a) Many of them do an awful lot for charities both UK and internationally either with their own money or in their free time and
b) The vast majority are normal decent young men who earn a bit more than the average bloke does.

I'm not defending what the 2 players in question did or didn't do and I know from friends of one of them that he is prone to being an utter cocktard but I also think that people who make sweeping generalisations based on not knowing the people involved is the work of an idiot.

Yes. If the fanbase was similar to football, of which I am not ignorant nor blind to it's disgraceful reputation, history and demographic.

BTW what's a participan?

Participant. A simple typo. I would imagine any non-football fan would naturally be intelligent enough to realize that... Apparently not. You talk like someone who reads the red tops and get hysterical as a result. I suggest you ask the football going people on PH, (who you may or may not feel to be disgraceful, or an awful demographic).

What is it Bout this subject that brings the sweeping generalization cretins out from under their stones? If you are NOT a fan of football, then how on earth can you say with any authority what football fans are, or are not like? Don't tell me, the red top media.

Me, my other half and mour friends are fairly typical football fans, would you care to describe us, our attitudes and maybe our professions using your in depth knowledge of the headlines created by a minority who are now visible by their absence from the vast majority of football in Britain.

I fully agree they're both morons but neither are mackems. Nicklas Bendtner was born in Copenhagen and Lee Cattermole was born in Stockton-on-Tees.
