You're right, that picture was a building that toppled due to ill-concieved excavation works, but others have topped because buildings were enlarged (beyond grnated planning) but foundations were not. Then there's things like the high-speed train deraillment, hushed up by the authorities.

It's like the place is one huge filmset for what a modern economy should look like; all the scenery is there, but it's just codged together with gaffer-tape and nails. There is no sense of permanence or purpose.

In my experience this is true "some" of the time.

It depends on which companies are doing the building, who is supervising, how much is being paid... the list goes on and on

Far more buildings have not fallen down wink, but in a country as huge as China, and with the level of construction going on you would expect mistakes/corruption to be there

I would not write off all of the infrastructure built over the last 10 years, but I would imagine we have not seen the last of the quality problems

I civil engineering terms, you're way off the mark. Can you cite any single example of a recent building topple in the UK or Europe? Even if you cast the net wider, it is still very rare and, for China, very worrying.

the first thing that spring to mind is also one of the biggest building failures and resulting implosion and demolitions in the world.

This was only a few years ago in Texas.

Didn't even finish it before it had to be blown up

laugh You will note I said UK & Europe and that it was 'rarer' even if you cast the net wider.

And that, in a nutshell sums up the problem. One of the follies of a command economy is to belive that what it commanded can and will be achieved in a satisfactory manner. Sometimes, you can command too much.

Ah but there is the key, to admit it as a screw up and blow it up as oppossed to covering it up, finishing it, and letting it fall down with people in it. smile

I don't think we in the west can really comprehend the scale of construction in China.

Here is just one example... Tianjin's new CBD, as big as down-town Manhattan and all going up at once.

and the roads and bridges to get you there
