I don't really do supermarkets but I wonder if he was objecting to having to scan stuff himself?

Comments in another forum suggest that theft through not scanning items is massive.

Seems a bit odd that they let him do it again and again before letting him know.

If they'd just pointed out that they thought he'd accidentally missed some items the first time would he have continued?

He probably would have "accidentally stolen" some items again, no.

What is the point? The self-scan is to save on headcount, but in order to avoid going bust due to people failing to scan stuff by accident or design they have to man the self-scan...

So what we have is an amusement park for frustrated amateur till jockeys that couldn't make the team that serves only as a means of annoying customers who'd rather a till jockey did the work and a weak point for thieves to exploit and drive up the cost of shopping.

Paging Bob the Dinosaur; corporate wedgie required in aisle 3!

They called the Police because it was the fifth time they'd observed it but the first time they could prove it. Allegedly.

yes

If it was a one off issue it would have been "Big deal, live in fear of forgetting sometimes myself." Especially if it had been a small item.

Hard to 'forget' to scan a bottle or a cheese each time 4 or 5 times over 16 days though...

Seems he is/has suffered from credit crunch.

Wiki said:
Worrall Thompson opened his first restaurant - Ménage à Trois - in Knightsbridge in 1981, notable for only serving starters and puddings.[3] He then launched several successful restaurants, including Wiz and Woz in West London and Metro in Jersey — all of which reflect his somewhat individual approach to food. Until late 2006, he was Catering Director for Old Luxters Barn, in Buckinghamshire.

In February 2009, his restaurant holding company AWT Restaurants was placed into administration. Four restaurants closed - the Notting Grill in west London, the Barnes Grill in south-west London, together with two pubs in Henley-on-Thames, the Lamb Inn and the Greyhound with the loss of 60 jobs, Worrall Thompson personally bought back the remaining Windsor Grill in Berkshire, the Kew Grill in south-west London, and delicatessen the Windsor Larder.

It was revealed in April 2009 that Thompson's restaurant chain trouble was the result of its being "overstretched" and that his restaurants "had debts of more than £800,000 and owed 214 creditors money.Later in 2009, Thompson re-opened The Greyhound.

Ah, the article I read, on the BBC IIRC, didn't mention that...
