Hmm, think I might phone Crimestoppers. Sounds like you have done this before biggrin
To be honest I have no idea, a GPS logger seems to me like a good way of planning a route to your destination. Actually digging along that route is another thing. You'd only have to get it slightly wrong and you could end up somewhere else.

Actually that is one very high-precision surveying/heading job, however it was done. Commercial GPS is good only for about 10m or 30ft radius precision... note the linked pic shows breaking-through right under & entirely within the machine's footprint = rather less than 3inches of error. It is impressive.

The fact it's not the first tunnel to this location suggests somebod is/are very motivated and capable

...even if not now wildly enriched.

ETA: the OP's thread title is misplaced; this particular crim may not have hit the jackpot, but to pull this off? Very definitely not stupid IYSWIM.

Field GPS systems use a base unit on the ground aswell as the 3 satellites.
The accuracy at 100ft is inch perfect.
Quite pricey though.

What's a POC?

Seems like some very clever work for such a low pay out - got to be more to it I'd have thought?

Trial run for something more serious?

I was thinking this too but, would it not increase the chance of being caught? Then again, as the title of this thread indicates; crims are stupid, so anything is possible!

Only if the next target was local. trial run 100s of miles away from the main target and months if not years away. It's a possibility.

Oh for sure, I just meant in the sense of cheap handheld Garmin / smartphone level. And a chap commisioining a differntial base unit on a cash machine would be pretty obvious troll wink

Still - getting there blind & underground is good going, even with cheap lasers etc for checking direction.
