I'm sure there is more to the story than is being reported. However, these are pre-school age kids. The parents were carrying out these "bizarre" cultural practices in the privacy of their own home. The crux of the argument then becomes, is this harmfull for the children? I say no. The Norewgian social services appear to think yes.

The crux of the argument is how are the children behaving in a norwegian society. And how did the parenting of those kids contribute to it. Social services are not snooping around every immigrants home...They are acting on situations that occur in public that are then traced back to the home.

Ok. But why shouldn't Norway expect Norwegian citizens to grow up in a Norwegian manner?

If you live in a country where people do not generally eat with their hands then these parents are disadvantaging their children and ultimately segregating them from their society.

I recal at prep school a kid turning up and trying to eat crumble and custard with his hands. He also wiped his arse with his hands He was a fking idiot but far less so than his moronic parents who were comprehensively failing to raise their child appropriately.

There will be more to this story but even at its most elemental level I wholly agree with their actions.
They were being "unNorwegian" in the privacy of their own home, not trying to change the whole of Norway. These are preschool age kids. They would conform to the social norms in no time at all when they start school. In my experience, Indian immigrants put a great deal of emphasis on assimilating with wider society in their schools and workplaces but retain their native culture in their homes. Over generalisation, I know.

I agree there is probably more to the story.

I agree. The point to living in Norway is that it is Norway, if you want to live like your in India then bloody move to India.
All the Indian people I know in the UK/Europe live as 'normal' British families would. Okay, they eat Indian food a bit more often and the central heating is generally turned a few clicks higher. hehe
Which sounds fine. I wouldn't go to somewhere third world & expect running water etc, so why would they (third worlders) come here & live like they are in a shanty town?

Personally I don't care what colour/culture people are, they should live to suit the country they are in because if they don't they are living in the wrong place.

They are 1 and 3 years old. What level of interaction do you think they have with wider Norwegian society other than going to playschool and going to the shops with Mummy? Should they have learned the Norwegian National Anthem by now and developed a taste for pickled herring?

Same. And they have the same opportunities as everyone else an the huge benefit of moving in and understanding 2 big cultures.

When changing countries it is important to retain some of your culture but essential to adopt and understand your new culture.

You can spot instantly those in the UK who understand that understanding both an when one is more appropriate than the other is very beneficial for everyone.

Raising your children in the West in the style of an illiterate peasant farmer is not acceptable and I wish we would do more to explain this to fellow citizens.

They should have learnt to use a knife & fork when eating & so forth, I'm suspect they eat at playschool after all.

Whats wrong with eating with your hands? I don't really care if its living like a peasant 'farmer'.

Just because a culture does soemthing in an 'advanced' way doesnt necessarily mean its any better.

Plus I am sure many parents sleep with their kids.

That said, I would hope there is more to it.

1 and 3 your old using a knife and fork? Have you looked in at a playschool at lunch time? It's akin to a Chimpanzees tea party!

The question I have is...how are norwegian kids in a norwegian playschool? In a British society..there is nothing wrong in how the indian family conducted themselves...And I am proud of that fact. But how is Norway looking at the whole thing? That is the point of this debate..I think.

Emigrating to Norway then eating a Masala Dosa - surely that's not on. How are the kids meant to integrate into the Norwegian way of life. Should be forced to eat Moose, Reindeer and Cheese imo. 'When in Rome.....' and all that.

When you try to engineer the political makeup of the state, for example to increase the number of females in power as the Norwegians have done, you end up with small minded ninnies in positions of authority because they satisfied a particular quota not because they are actually any good or want to work for all of society. Hence the increase in silly nannying and meddling from the state over there. Hewitts, Harmans and Abbotts are examples, all that 'Blair's Babes' bks too!

About 30 years ago the Norwegian govt censored the cartoon movie "Dumbo" .. because some of the elephants were dancing topless - which was deemed offensive and immoral for children.

You couldnt make it up.
I've just done a Google search about that. Couldn't find anything, in fact "dumbo norway topless censored" throws up this thread!

Am I going to get a parrot?

I doubt it; file under 'insert lefty council of your choice bans the word "Christmas"' in the big bin marked 'bks'.

Right, I'm telling my young kids that sleeping in my bed and eating with their hands is illegal.

Also, not tidying their rooms and teasing the cat.
You could get some real useful mileage out of this if you play it right. hehe

This was told to me by family living out there at the time ...so going on what they knew locally ( maybe it was exaggerated??? - or maybe true .... will do some searches)
