Appears to me that stating 'asians only' or similar is effectively stating 'no dogs, blacks, Irish, English, Polish etc. etc.', or am I missing something? How is it any better or worse?

Bigotry: intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself.

I fail to see how a tongue in cheek remark about someone's accent warrants such strong words?

The funny one is gay men or single females.

I bet a woman placed that advert. what she got against single males?

My first thought was that it was placed by a man who isn't fussy.

I actually have no issue with it for flat shares. No matter what. Plenty here say "Suit single professional non-smoker" or similar.

For actual properties? Different story.

It is exactly the same. Surprised some disagree. They are probably Asians with rooms to rent.

Can you imagine the outcry if a christian B&B owner said no gays?

Sorry, no such thing as discrimination if you are white.

Yes, because flat shares are the same as businesses.

Well, do you think you'd be ok if you said "$GROUP people only to sit next to me" on a bus?

No. Because that is a space that is available for the public to use.

A private flat share it is understandable to specify who you want to share with as it is sharing private space. Not operating a business or using public space.

I don't have an issue with gay only, white only, Uzbekistani only in that instance. Saves time wasting. But, in order to avoid getting peoples knickers in a twist maybe the phrase "would suit Philippians student/Polish asparagus picker/Justin Beiber stalker/bnp member" would probably be better.

The point remains that (deliciously ironically) in the name of equality, all people are not equally able to excercise this decision without fear of reprisal.

I'd bet a sizable sum that any "white only" adverts would be removed/prosecuted in short order.

That right there, is my issue with it. It's either allowed or not; it is not something suitable to only be available to a few.

Just to clarify:

I have issues with any group advertising a property as being for a particular group.

I have issues with a company refusing to serve a particular group.

I don't have issues with private households stating who they wish to enter into a houseshare arrangement with, provide they are not abusive in how they say it.

This.

Renting a whole house or flat out is very different to renting a room in your house. If you are renting a room out then you are living with someone and should be able to discriminate on any grounds you see fit, if a whole property is being let then discrimination is unacceptable.

I'd go along with that. The Chinese students who live around the area I live in tend to put their adverts up bilingually or just in Chinese. Personally I think that it's fair enough that they might want to share with another Chinese student and not waste the time of other people responding to the advert.

It's a different situation from a landlord advertising an empty property or a hotel advertising rooms.

So you're happy for ads to specify who they do want. Would you be equally happy for them to specify who they don't want, ie no Pakistanis?
