Yep. The web lives on the Internet (that’s one simple way to understand things anyway), as does email, and as do lots of other systems.

The internet is the physical stuff to connect everyone together, the web is the pages you look at via a browser.

It a bit like the difference between the rail network, and the train service that runs on it.

Thats how I understand it anyway.

Okay, look at it this way: The Internet is the name of a network, that currently has billions of connections. The web is an application that runs on that network. Email is another.

That’s a bit simplistic, but gets the idea across. The web is actually an agreed set of standards—a language, if you like—for using on the Internet, which (at its most basic level) allows text and graphic information to be shared.

Sorry, didn't know it was an old one. I liked the sky joke anyway.

Shows why the definitive article and capital letters are so important.

The problem isn't the stuff based outside of the UK at all. You have to consider how the internet would work with no google, no hotmail, no yahoo, no ebay, no facebook and crucially none of the content delivery networks which pretty much every website relies upon for load balancing. Ever wondered why so many websites contact Akamai when they're loading?
Somehow I think multi-billion dollar companies put in contingency plans when the Americans revealed that they have (what they think is) an off button.

This power is worrying though as the only people who will not suffer from a shutoff now would be places like North Korea. I don't suppose China would be too displeased either as they'd be able to do a local takeover with their own internet-lite - and then only let the 'real' internet back in under their own terms. Probably.
Still wondering where all the ICANN money is going. Would be fun to see their books. For something that's non-profitmaking, they don't half charge a lot for resources that aren't even theirs to sell.
