This is a chance for the catholic church to come into the 21st century.
How about "Pope Factor"? Loads of cardinals turning up to a football stadium, telling their sad stories and then getting the chance to say mass in front of Simon Cowell, winner chosen by public vote.

Nazi stuff or kiddy stuff?
He's been implicated in the kiddy stuff for a long time. He made sure personally that many abusers would never see justice. The Vatican has been neck deep in corruption and financial fraud for decades as another poster mentioned, I can't see why it would catch up with them now.
Rotten organisation, right to the core.
"In God's Name" by David A. Yallop is a fascinating read into the lengths those involved would go to make sure it not only never came to light, but that it would continue. The follow up, "The Power and the Glory: Inside the Dark Heart of John Paul II's Vatican" is equally shocking.
"I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. However, in today’s world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, in order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognise my incapacity to adequately fulfil the ministry entrusted to me.
For this reason, and well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of Saint Peter, entrusted to me by the Cardinals on 19 April 2005, in such a way, that as from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours, the See of Rome, the See of Saint Peter, will be vacant and a Conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is."
In other words - There's an altar boy involved.

Or he could have a serious illness which will preclude him from doing his Popely duties, whatever they are...Only the 2nd pope to resign?

That's what they were saying back in 1979 when John Paul II was elected (although they were referring to late 20th cfentury of course at the time).
Because he was Polish and from a (then) Communist country they thought he would be forward thinking and progressive. He turned out to be an arch-conservative.
He wasn't the man they thought they were getting but you can't deny that between him, Gorby, Maggie and Ronnie they brought to an end the Cold War, fairly much despite the best efforts of their advisors. My only axe to grind with JP2 (as a non religious type myself) was his stance on condoms which the church seriously needs to look at given the current prevalence of potentially fatal STDs.

His stance on lots of "theological" and "doctrinal" issues was extremely conservativeMy only axe to grind with JP2 (as a non religious type myself) was his stance on condoms which the church seriously needs to look at given the current prevalence of potentially fatal STDs.
