What the? They dragged a cuffed man behind the van?!?! I hope they go to jail for that.
I'd just cuff then all behind the same van and drive around for a few days - that would send a strong message to the guys imposing the law.
I think Ghandi was right when he said an eye for an eye will leave us all blind. Justice is one thing, grotesque revenge another.

Of course Gandhi had a good point. I'd still cuff them behind the van and ask if they would like to be driven around. biggrin

Another example of an entire continent pulling itself apart. I have no faith in Africa, never had. Read about Liberia and seen various things about Nigeria, don't think i will ever find anything about the place to ever like, such wonderful natural beauty corrupted by manking at its most brutal and evil.

Typical BBC reporting.

"Man cuffed behind police van and driven through the streets who later died of his injuries"
They fail to point out he died because he had the st kicked out of him in the cells not injuries from being tied behind the police van. I've seen the video and most of the time two cops are holding his legs.

Still. Makes a good story eh. rolleyes

Some police watch federation woman they spoke to put them right but the interviewer glossed over that fact.

SA has never been a place I'd like to visit, party because I dislike most SA. I think it's their accent. shoot

"Most of the time they're holding his legs"? Have you not seen the footage where they drop his legs and the van drives off because they can't keep up with the van anymore?

Not saying having the st kicked out of him in the cells didn't finish the job, but I think we're all appalled with the savagery involved in dragging a handcuffed man behind a vehicle at MUCH faster than running pace.

The longer footage is substantially worse than the few seconds shown by the BBC. One of the reasons I didn't link to it in the first instance.

Not at all, but the BBC footage omits a few salient points;
  1. Police officers at the strike had been machetted to death on the previous day
  2. The video coverage (still on web) showed police firing into the ground to try to stop the advance and miners walking onto the line of fire
  3. local (black) commentators on SA media noting that the strike was not official/legal and was motivated by political power struggle
Was an horrendous incident, but my point is that the wider facts painted a very, very different picture from the BBC's 'flat' "police shoot miners" reporting.
Mmmmm - I know some people love to disparage everything the BBC puts out, but that smells rather skewed too...

There was 1 Police officer killed (and 4 strikers).

People do NOT walk into a line of fire, the video showed shots into the ground and THEN shots into the crowd (CNN reported this).

So, the strike wasn't official. Does that justify firing live rounds into a group of people? What is this? The 19th century?

None of you guys have ever spent time in SA have you? A taxi and it's driver out there bear no relation to your local family Asian run biz here that will always provide a minicab to get you home from the pub.
The drivers are gangsters, they hire an unroadworthy taxi, often a 10 year old Toyota hiace with millions of kilometers on it and then run it solidly for a day. If it develops , or has, a safety critical fault its ignored. They are often in fatal crashes when the driver ensures he cant be traced. They are all armed and getting to the point, they will shoot any policeman who takes action against them. Not when stopped at the roadside but an ambush later. There are some big players at the top of this mess who have stopped some excellent public transport projects that would do a lot for the poor who have to suffer the taxis now. So I think there was previous here and these police were probably evening the score in that direct way that Africans have.
These taxis operate more like informal buses BTW, stopping to pick up anyone who asks at the roadside, so long as they can pay. so they are often overloaded as well.
So yes it's an appalling mess but it's not what it looks like from here, these Police at the sharp end did not lose it for no reason. That doesnt make it right of course but I can see why the Police would want to deter the actions of the taxi drivers.

Indeed. I'm not saying it's not horrid and abhorrent - that's a given - just that the way the BBC report it makes out he died because he was tied to the truck. It's almost like a tabloid headline.

I'm in no way making light of what happened - my comment is aimed at the reporting rather than the story. smile

You'd be a rubbish headline writer at The Sun.

Well, I must confess I struggle to believe that anyone could seek to justify this by saying ".... most of the time they were holding his legs....".

I also appreciate it is a totally different way of life in that part of the world but my word.

The rape and mutilation of that girl was worse (as in premeditated), but it has largely been ignored due to the Oscar story.

The stories which are missed from main headlines - even in SA - would make your head spin.

In today's news - 2-year old raped and left for dead

And the links in the article show it's by no means an isolated case of its kind.
