No one seems to confuse Pizza Hut with Pizza Express, both contain the same word
Another example is high street fashion outlet "M&Co" (previously known as Mackays Stores) who tread very close indeed to the well known "M&S".

No it isn't. It's purely a business dispute.

As an aside, there's a second hand white goods business in North London called "SELLFRIDGES". It's been trading for years.

hehe
Indeed.
Twits who wanna copyright words that have been in use for ages, and sometimes letters, like fk, or that lot that wanted to 'own' the 'Keep calm' words...ffs, it's English we all own it.

Where, exactly, has either party actually referred to the fact that they're gay or that it's a gay bar, explicitly, in any of the coverage?
Really?

I must be wrong then, two people have said so, one with the fabled rolleyes which is usually pretty conclusive.

Very rare nowadays. Your average forum dweller just keeps arguing for the sake of it.

This is not a dispute in Copyright

Its probably either "trademarks" or "passing off" but who cares eh?

It's all the same thing to me when people try and take ownership of common usage words.

Hmm, interesting case though (to me anyway) It seems unlikely that he will prevail either way, but he obviously feels strongly enough to invest a significant sum to take this to court. Plus, he will have to pay costs if he looses. I would love to hear why his lawyer thinks he will win.

Worked in a gay bar and this story doesn't surprise me.

Never trust anyone who requires a parade for their sexuality.

It's a standard fking business dispute.

But, of course the usual 'tards are going to make a big deal out of it.

I don't think it's "standard" at all. It looks particularly idiotic to me. Either they have hopeless lawyers or they are not listening to their lawyers. Unless perhaps they are just doing it for publicity.

The idea that using "queer" in the name of a single venue in Manchester should prevent it's use on a completely different venue 100 miles away is not going to work in front of a judge.
