So we need extra capacity, and building more runways at Gatters or Heathrow is probably not the long term solution.
May be a silly question...but why not?Existing infrastructure is largely there. Skillbase is there. Businesses are located to take advantage of the 2 airports.
What they need is to come up with some idea of linking Birmingham with London, maybe a super-duper train line?
But seriously, Boris Island = daft and will never happen. Isle of Grain? far, far too expensive and with the associated idea of closing Heathrow and turning it into a 'new' borough with eleventy million new houses is out there with the fairies.
Expand Stansted? Bingo! I'll be betting that's his big idea from the start and is the only viable option in the short term. Rail links? check. Road links? check. Space to expand? check.

The answer is Southend (the only time Southend has been the correct answer to any question ever posed).
Having spent the money on the new train station HMG could also upgrade the existing and well-used line for a 30-min rail link to central London.
Unfortunately the road infrastructure is dire and already very busy. The answer is Southend (the only time Southend has been the correct answer to any question ever posed).

Isn't the point of a hub airport is to provide connections? People using hubs are generally supposed to get onto another plane not leave the airport for a local destination.
So why build in the S/E? Couldn't the hub be anywhere in the UK, leaving LHR for those wanting to travel to London?

Try persuading the average American that they want to go thru Manchester or Birmingham. So why build in the S/E? Couldn't the hub be anywhere in the UK, leaving LHR for those wanting to travel to London?

What does Southend Airport have? The A127: narrow, often at a standstill due to crashes thanks to loads of concealed/short exits along the Bas stretch (e.g. Pound Lane & the various gypsy camps), loads of industrial traffic, loads of commuters, 50 limit on some bits, 40 on others, the Fortune Of War 'roundabout', I could go on - suffice to say it is a real stty road that is already at capacity.
At night it's okay, I've used it and it was fine. Anywhere near rush hour- forget it!

I think the government should just put a pin in the map somewhere in Central Southern England and build a purpose built hub that serves all of Southern England and the Midlands. Take somewhere like the old airfield at Upper Heyford - equidistant between London and Birmingham, smack on the M40/A43 and both Chiltern and Brum-Oxford railway lines, divert HS2 a few miles West and have a station there which can double-up as an M40 'parkway' station with 30 mins trips to either city centre. Yep prime rural Oxfordshire and a whole load of pissed off wealthy home owners, but they were already upset about HS2. The farmers can turn all their fields into car parks and retire. I'll have my £10M in consultancy fees now thanks Dave.

I'm assuming they've factored the SS Montgomery into all these plans for the Isle of Grain?
Which is why Boris Island will never happen, but strangely it hardly ever gets gets a mention. http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/05/30/ss-rich...
Just drop it Boris, you know full well it's going no where. What has he got to gain from keeping up the facade ?......Ummmm I wonder.

London needs a single large airport between north and west of London, as that's the most likely direction of approach for travellers.
Not a single chance of anything being down to the north or west of the M25 as that is the badlands areIt must be to the south or east of london as that is where the vast majority of proper people live

we have nothing in the south east.
Gatwick, Stansted, Heathrow, Luton, City................Northolt for government stuff, too.
Hardly 'nothing'.
Currently anyone flying from kent has to travel around the M25.
Anything is better than extending Heathrow. Sure it will cost more but that place is a dump and not very easy to get to for most people.
My left field choice would be somewhere around Watford; I know we would have to bulldoze a lot of fields producing rapeseed oil; but them's the breaks yeah?

In the short term, expanding Stansted makes the most geographical sense though, as has been posted already, that's been suggested before, and the local objectors were very noisy.
To emphasise another point, building yet another airport isn't the answer, unless it is to be mega huge, for what London needs is a big hub. It has got one, call Heathrow so .... get over it.

A hub with limited operating hours, limited options for expansion and already at capacity, therefore without the capability to either serve emerging markets all over the world, or to compete with other European Hub airports.TTwiggy said:

I think the best idea is to just set it off; the explosion will cause millions of £ of improvements to Sheerness.Boris Island masterplan by some squaddie; it's not bad as far as it goes, linking into Crossrail is the main addition I can think of. 'Thames Barrier II; the return of the barrage' needs to be built soon anyway so killing 2 birds with 1.5 stones seems like a plan.

Not just Sheerness though is it, Essex, Isle of Grain, whatever is located up the Thames and Medway, possibly all the way along the coast to Herne-Bay including their stupid windy mills will be affected. If they could have done it safely it would have been done years ago. No one in his right mind or any successive governments, including that halfwit Boris will put their name to it. The only time that thing will be touched, if ever, will be on it's tipping point of going up and there is no choice but to take some sort of action.
i.e. It ain't gonna happen.
