and most of the US soldiers in Vietnam were off their faces, I think (but I'm not sure) some kind of strong speed based stimulant is still given to fighter pilots these days who fly long sorties during combat, adderall or such like.
Dexedrine, an amphetamine, was popular amongst pilots particularly in WWII and Vietnam - also amongst Northern Soulers at all-nighters (hence etymology of Dexys Midnight Runners)andy_s said:

Weren't British and American political leaders similarly 'medicated'? The allies certainly fed their troops all manner of 'gear' to get them through the war.
My late father served in WW2 and I recall him telling me many years ago that benzedrine was liberally doled out to allied troops, some kind of stimulant, amphetamine possibly (can't be arsed to google it) and also cigarettes were freely given out as rations, tins of Woodbines for the cannon fodder and tins of Players for the ossifers so he said. The French had fags (Gauloises Caporal) and a little bottle of eau de vie in their rat packs until the late eighties, still had official camp brothels come to think of it. No drugs though except vitamin K(ronenberg).
My old neighbour, now sadly gone, flew in Lancs in WW2, in his last few years,he opened up about his experiences as a bomb aimer.
A very level headed chap, not given to exaggerating or glorifying he told me they were issued IIRC "wake up" tablets to be taken at the pre-mission briefing, these were Benzedrine or similar I believe.
Anyhow, if the mission was scrubbed at the last moment, after the ingestion of these tablets, then sleep was impossible so down to the pub they went. Drinking alcohol on top of benzedrine is how the wild reputation of RAF aircrew came about.
My neighbour said he wouldn't take his after the first few missions as he didn't need any help staying awake and the after effects were unpleasant.
