Funny way of going about it, especially as many have had their income cut or gone completely.

I did ok pre lockdown. Earned enough to cover rent and utilities and have some left over for fun.

Now I'm minus every month. Certainly won't be going to pubs, getting hair cuts or eating out from now on.

I got the £10.99 clippers from Wahl, no more getting ripped off for a no3 all over, and that was at pre lockdown prices.

Where could you go for a fiver?!
Regularly had my hair cut in Blackburn or Bradford for £5. paid £12 once and felt robbed.

I'm not sure if this is the right section but it involves money and I assume news may mention it at some point.

What price increases have everyone noticed so far?

Guy at work today said his barber has gone from £10 to £15, can't see that price going back down once the barber is used to the money.
The mrs's mums hairdresser was £35, now £40 with a PPE charge ontop.
The mrs's auntie for some reason has been told previously at the dentist that she has to see the hygienist every time she goes. Its on the private side of the dentist and they want £35, yes £35 PPE charge. I assume they are opening a new box per patient.

I've heard talks of the pubs being more but not seen anything.
The price of the box has gone up by 1000%.
The hygienist now also has to wait around for 1 hour between patients.
Prices will rise or they will close....and they may have to close anyway.
Surely before covid dentists and hygienists wore masks at least, sometimes eye protection. The added charge sounds like an excuse, they have always had PPE costs.
They used to wear disposable surgical masks. Now they have far more PPE. Dentists are doing the highest risk work so their PPE is now much more extensive.

Gym membership costs will go up when they open again.

Gym Group sent an email round when they had to close, saying that if people continued to pay £10/m during lockdown they would be exempt from all price rises for 12 months after reopening.
My wife and I used a local gym. I got an old duffers' reduction, but it was still £20 per week (not £80 pcm as I thought). A session took up about an hour and a half with journey time, showering, etc.

Instead of the treadmill I now walk for the same length of time, and with the same heart-rate. If it's raining, I have some steps I use. I dug out some old dumbbells and do as many weights as I did at the gym, I do the same number of floor exercises. However, what I don't do is have to wait for my equipment, disinfect it every time, and neither do I have to wipe other people's sweat off the seats and handholds. I can do a whole session in 40 mins and go into a shower that I don't have to wear flipflops in. I can also pick the time I exercise without bothering about the post-schoolrun rush. I don't have to do my floor exercises next to two women chatting about how they are not sure the exercises are doing that much for them. Nor do I have to listen to loud mindless music. I now exercise six days a week, rather than the three or four before.

I'm going to set up a small gym in my garage. Nothing special, just a bench and a floor I don't mind dropping weights onto. My youngest used to be a personal trainer when he was into rugby seriously. He's still got contacts and reckons that he'll be able to source a bench and weight selection (at my level - charming) very cheaply.

It's sort of the other way round; it's not so much the barber has gotten used to the increase, rather that the client has gotten used to the increase.

For example, years ago a mate told me a story about when he was a nipper and worked in a chippie. He said it was say 50p for a bag of chips. Then one year there was a potato shortage and a bag of chips went up to £1. Next year there was no spud shortage - but the price of a bag of chips did not go back down to 50p, because the customers had become used to paying £1 for a bag.

I'm guessing that's the minimum they charge for minimal hair. Like Homer Simpson turning up for a trim.

If wages rise there is no issue, if they don't demand will fall. Its simple economics if things have substitutes then prices will rise but profits will still fall. Barber v clippers at home is a good example. Tube v cycle, eating out v making something now you have had 3 months practice etc.

My wife has found cross stitch kits have gone through the roof.

Seems to be quite a black market in them too. She has bought a couple from the Netherlands and Germany. I did suggest she should be buying a couple to sell on.

Some DIY stuff has gone up / is hard to find / minimum order values for delivery have gone up.

Worth remembering though that he may well have had a £10k grant and 80% of his taxable earnings paid whilst furloughed? Not all, but many did.

I think we will see what people will look back on in a few months and see as "profiteering". In my business, we have dropped our rates, not much, 10% or so, as business has been a bit slower. Some are dropping them crazily, but that's just a race to the bottom that will do no one any good.
There has be a sensible approach, and if barbers and beauticians, dentists etc are processing less clients now, no disrespect, but they should expect less income and less profit. To pass it all on to the customer may work in the short term, but people will push back eventually, especially if that customer ends up being paid less, as many will on the back of this.

Range Rover and Lamborghini? Do you have any idea how much dentists and vets earn? Dentists are on about £70k and vets around £40k.
When I was doing some IT work for a dental surgery 30 years ago the two dentists, one of whom was part time, were grossing close to £1 million.
That was at the time they were only thinking about bringing in hygienists so they could concentrate on the more profitable stuff.

I guess they need to charge more to earn a living, from less customers ..
you don't even have to spend that, my Wahl clippers were £13. As you said no reason to visit the barbers again.

What has surprised me is how much some people pay for a hair cut. I was paying £5 but a few on here were paying £30.
You do realise that some folk actually like a good, stylish haircut?

No that was a standard charge for a haircut, Lots off, or little off. Mind you the only styling was parting or not, curved or straight at the back, above or below the ears.

But then again why would a man want anything else?

The GF had her contract cancelled whilst lockdown was being announced and was escorted of the premises. Contracts that were 10 11 12 an hour before are now 8.50 an hour. Double whammy
If your referring to hourly pay, £8.50 is below the minimum wage so it’s illegal.

There are also other folk who have been paying decent money for what are quite simple haircuts , the lock down has given them the opportunity to do pretty much the same at home .

There are a lot of middle aged blokes loosing there hair who have just thought fk it and shaved it off because they've been furloughed so if they don't like it they can let it re grow ( atleast the bits that actually grow)

On the subject of pay surely if we have many more millions unemployed then that will push wages down ?

Employers won't want to pay more than they need to and the number of applicants per position must rise ...

How can any hair dresser make money charging £5 a cut, unless you're in and out of the chair in max 10 minutes?

Mine was £25 before and was generally in there for an hour with a short wait and a wash. I think it was meant to be £28. No problem if it's £30 after this.

£50 Wahl clippers sounds a bit steep. I'm not sure what mine cost 15 years ago, but with frequent cleaning and clipper oil they are still going strong.

Some women pay BIG money for haircuts. It always seems a bit of a con to me.

Prices are only going to rise for everything.

Pandemic, Brexit, power/wealth moving to China/India etc. All add up.

The Ponzi scheme that is the economy will keep going in some form, until it doesn't.
