And he felt like it was a good idea to ask his gay son that question, apparently spin
Who apparently “couldn’t answer”. Or didn’t want too..

Football fans. You know the ones who drink loads of beer, not that educated and fight each other. They might care.

Good man, ridiculous in this day and age we still have taboos about homosexuality in many sports. Many of us also remember how poor Justin Fashanu was treated not least of which by his scumbag brother.

Because as I understand it there is an issue with people coming out as gay in football as evidenced by this being news, not being a football fan personally yet knowing the international nature of football signings I was just wondering something I should have probably kept to myself, yes I realise this reply is probably putting the other foot in my mouth.

My son played in a level 5 rugby team. 'Everyone' knew that one of the players was gay. Nothing was said, it was just one of those things. He didn't realise it was apparent and he geared himself up and told the team one time. They all sort of went, yeah right, and he was a bit deflated. My son said it was obviously a big thing for him, but to the guys, it was immaterial.

I don't know about football, but I'm surprised that it is such a shocking thing to discover that a player's gay. It is probable that more than one player in a team is gay. If the others don't want to say anything, so what?

I was on a licensing unit and Brighton has its share of gay bars/clubs. I would pay a visit and see colleagues there - they out of uniform of course. This was back in the 90s. Is football still in the dark ages?

Of course, it's uneducated people who like beer who indulge in stereotyping.

Great to hear this, it’s long overdue in the sport and a brave thing for him to do which will I am sure will make it easier for others in future. I sincerely hope he is treated well by fellow players and fans alike.

I do find it very sad that this is still a significant thing to do in the UK, it’s 2022 for goodness sake. Objecting to someone else’s sexual orientation is the sort of pointlessly cruel control of other people that should have been consigned to the bin decades ago. The fact that it’s still illegal to be gay in 69 countries shows we still have a long way to go.

Quite. Maybe daimlerv8 might like to remind himself what married straight man, Graeme Le Saux went through during his career because of the dark ages attitude to sexuality that dominates football….

Now that's a compelling and sobering read.

Well they are most the ones who are homophobic, hence why footballers hide their sexulity.

Most studies on homephobia are linked to ''psychoticism is a personality trait marked by hostility, anger and aggression toward others''

Hmm i guess they like to chant lovely stuff about other fans and clubs....whistle

What a weird question. Why wouldn't he? Men use men's changing rooms. I've never seen changing rooms labelled "straight" and "gay".

Are some people pretending they don't know why this matters or do they really not know?

They remind me of the people who think that racism wouldn't exist if people stopped talking about it.

Kids have a knack of dealing with parents and their 'super weird' questions. I know mine do!

I know exactly why it matters. I have a relative who is gay and plays football to quite a high local level. They won't come out because of the effect it could have on their career.

It says a lot about football that he felt the need to "come out". Was a newspaper trying to announce this as a story??
Apparently several news outlets knew but have been sat on it to let him tell it his way which is remarkable in itself.

If you can’t see why this is necessary, then that’s the problem.

That’s a very good point. I hope the lad gets all the support he needs and fans treat him with respect. I remember Sol Campbell and Graeme Le Saux getting a lot of grief from fans when I was growing up and lots of rumours about Ashley Cole which fans jumped on with glee. Hopefully the game has moved on, but I’m not holding my breath.

Even in MotoGP it’s been a big thing around Rossi and rumours about his sexuality right up until he retired and had a kid with his long term girlfriend.

As much as we want both racism and homophobia to be consigned to the bin, I think we’re only part way along the journey. The positive in that is that we are on the journey to acceptance.

It would have a positive effect on his career surely?

Why on earth would it not?
