Or it could equally be someone upset by something else entirely, some domestic issue, or something else unrelated to Ukraine. Or just an attention seeking tw@, or mental illness, or, or, or...by the way, Fico is a left-wing politician from a left-wing party, although also nationalist in nature too. He can't be put in a traditional pigeon hole.

What I'm saying is let's not speculate, it doesn't help.
He spouts Kremlin talking points, he's a Putin stooge; I don't really care if he's just a useful idiot or actually on the payroll. I don't want him shot though, the slovakian people elected this ballsack, they should suffer under his governance until the next election like the rest of us do when we elect a duffer.

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia (AP) — Thousands of Slovaks rallied in the capital on Thursday to protest – again – a controversial overhaul of the country’s public radio and television services, a move that critics say would result in the government taking full control of the media. The proposed changes would mean the public broadcaster known as RTVS would cease to exist and be replaced by a new organization

This is what Putin did and the Georgian government are currently trying to do the same. The first step to allow government controlled propaganda to be fed to the nation.

In no way do I support this shooting though, his condition is currently described as life threatening.

His security don't seem in much of a rush to protect him.

Dunno, if he was about to go full on Orban/Putin/Xi what choice do they have?

But how do you predict someone is gonna go that way?

Again if someone shot Hitler in 1936 we wouldn't support that but it would have been the right thing to do although we'd never have known it.

So put me down as a firm "don't know".

Certainly didn't seem to be in a hurry, nor did they when it came to getting him out either.

It seems as though absolutely nobody was in any sort of rush, the policeman nearest to him jumps from the bang and then runs away! Policeman nearest the camera looks confused thinking I should be doing something here but not sure what.

And the public seem chilled af considering the bloke next to them just pulled a gun and shot their primer minister 5 times at point blank range

On this point it is reasonable for people to be in shock.

Is Fico the guy to ends up on the ground on the left?

Sounds like he's gonna live.

How well do you know Slovakia?

He’s caused so much division and aggression within Slovak society, similar to how trump causes division in America. As well as being a massive liar, his corruption knows no limits including trying to dismantle the legal system. It’s unbelievable really, if you could watch Slovak news and understand what he’s been doing it’s not surprising he’s caused so much anger etc.

What surprises me the most about Slovak politics, is how their members of parliament can get away with so much without being forced to resign etc.

Was this infighting among his "own side"? Culprit seems to have been a nationalist pro-Russian which makes no sense to me.

Tragically looks like it will be used as an excuse to clamp down on the media. Insane that in the modern world some people are turning away from democracy. frown

I suspect you know the answer as well as I do. But for those who don't, Fico and his party get elected predominantly off the back of the promises he makes to Babkas. They stay in power because they change the rules and being a fairly young democracy, a lot of people don't know what 'good' looks like. Although there have been a lot of protests (mainly youngsters to early 40's), the Slovaks being an essentially peaceful people, have done little more than rattle their keys. And yes, that's a thing.

Some of the changes to the laws over the last few years would have been kicked to the ground in a more established democracy; but in Slovakia they've been forced through irrespective of people's disagreements. One of my favourites is (I think) the Spatial Planning Act. Have a nice house on a decent chunk of land? If the Spatial Planning Committee for the area want to develop and your plot of land and house is in the way, they'll take it off you and you have something like 48 hours to pack up and get out. There were a couple of cases in the Košice region where people were told to get out of their homes and find somewhere new to live. Compensation was €1,000.

Yeah, Slovaks are unhappy and it doesn't surprise me that someone took a pot shot at Fico. I suspect however that freedoms will erode further in the wake of this.

Slovakia has been a huge success story for the EU, it would make good strategic sense for the Russians to destabilise it.

Slovak interior ministry running a somewhat vague "he wasn't alone" story.

My cynicism says this is going to be used as an excuse to enact some further questionable policy changes.

I don't believe that for a start, getting Facebook to do anything typically requires weeks.

Minister of certain things said:
two hours after the attack, and after the suspect had been detained, his Facebook and communication history was deleted.
