Great idea.

Get an underfunded professional military to babysit a bunch of teenagers who don't want to be there.
Nobody will join the army over 25 days litter picking or something else unless they actually want to join the army.

Exactly, it is just a veiled threat..."oh you are not going to do this, then let me talk to Sergeant Major who I am sure will have a years placement for you"

Don't think they're too bothered about filling in the details of an entirely imaginary 'policy'

They're never going to win the election so they might as well have a laugh with it.

If they paid minimum wage for jobs that ran alongside the services that they have mentioned, then as a much younger person I would feel a lot less annoyed.

However, none of this has been thought out and no real information has been provided prior to being released to the media.

This. Although they could have used a bit more imagination.

"Prime Minister Sunak has announced the flagship policy of adopting the Great British Youth Astronaut programme - every 18 year old will undergo 2 days of intensive astronaut training including prolonged exposure in unusual gravitational conditions using equipment at Thorpe Park our new Space Cadet education centre, thereby placing Britain at the forefront of space exploration for decades to come. Those unable to participate in the full training programme can have a go on the Dobble Tea Party ride instead"

An Army Reservist gets paid £58.99 per day. That's whether you're doing 9-5pm in the classroom or 3 days in a ditch.

There are many tory MPs now standing down with nothing to do. Maybe they should be pressed into service?

Absolutely mental!!! This proposal will cost them dear in pretty much every age group bar the older people (who probably never did national service!) but think it’s a great idea. Well done sunak, you’ve just alienated pretty much everyone with some last ditch roll of the dice, the U18s, their parents, grandparents, what a Pleb!

16-18 year olds have the highest unemployment rate as of March 24.

Plus, I suspect there will be a wide range of different types of job available.

Why is the community service aspect limited to only 18 year olds? Maybe if you have a bus pass, you should have to earn it.

So unpaid volunteering and less-than-minimum wage military service is the answer?

This is why we have a productivity crisis...

I suspect this is just the start of the culture war attacks that the Tories have in store for us over the next 6 weeks.

Expect tax breaks to discourage WFH.

Something anti-cyclist will be along.

Compulsory Union flags on parish halls.

Nothing that comes close to solving our productivity chasm and anaemic economic growth. Just stuff that old and grumpy people might get angry about.

Wait until you see the unemployment rate amongst Tory ex-MPs as of 5th July 24.

Half baked ridiculousness…
If thier so called plan is working so well, what do they need to come up with madness like this - it’s just to try and get a Sunday morning headline that says Sunak is all over the place - it has produced an even worse reaction.
He could be gone by Tuesday.

He does seem to be in the employ of Keir Starmer. This is reminiscent of May's campaign in terms of utter disastrousness.

There is some nugget of relevance in this proposal but tossing (so to speak) it out in an election window is not how you do it.

There are around 850000 NEETs in the Uk (ONS).
There are chronic shortages in the armed forces.

The army is not geared to handle thousands of unmotivated conscripts however the reality of the geopolitical situation is that there are at least two globally significant disputes (Ukraine and Taiwan) which might easily break out into proper continental conflicts. Making this change may, and I say may with all due caveats, make sense. The forces need manpower, and current recruitment is woeful. Just bumping salaries won’t help. So something must be done.

But not as a pre election throw of chump to the aging electorate segment.
