You have to realise that only the total losers and layabouts get any help from the gubberment in this country. If you spunked all your money up the wall and lived in a council house since leaving school, had five illegitimate kids by four women, never worked a day in your life, you'd not have to worry about money ever again.rolex said:

Jobseeker's Allowance is contribution-based for the first 6 months and not means tested, irrespective of the amount you have in savings. This grips my st to a fairly major extent, having been a higher-rate taxpayer for most of my working life, I'm now 'entitled' to £60 a week... for 6 months... after that, nothing.Meanwhile, on the other side of town, swamp donkeys who have never worked, and have no intention of ever doing so, can open their legs for 5 minutes and consequently live off the 'social' with no requirement to seek employment until the youngest of their bd offspring is 14. It's been said, but there's something very wrong here.
However, if it helps, with an air rifle/slingshot and a bit of woodcraft, you can cut down your food bills quite substantially. I'm lucky in that a neighbour has offered me the use of a proper .22. I also have access to lots of free firewood. Methinks I can see bunny/squirrel appearing on the menu in a big way.

Well, isn't that the point of savings?
Or would you rather keep them to spend on "stuff" and claim benefits to live on?
This all works very well until you consider this: Or would you rather keep them to spend on "stuff" and claim benefits to live on?
Take two identical people; one has savings (ie. they have done without that TVR, nice holiday etc) they get no benefits.
Second person has pissed it against the wall, drives a flash motor and holidays in the Maldives. He has no savings and gets benefits. <<--- this person is me.
Similar situation arises when you have to go into an old folks home - professional doley gets it all expenses paid while prudent saver has to spend it all.
It's a load of old bks that, as usual in the UK, favours those who have been irresposible or been lifetime spongers. The system should pay the benefits to all that have contributed; should be a black and white rule.
(Of course a sensible person has money salted away in different accounts in friends names and effectively has no savings).
