It's therefore common practice and surely reasonable to take her on shopping trips to assimilate her back into the 'real world' after a long time in prison..
Why? F**k them. Don't want to find life hard when you get out of prison after a long stretch? Don't commit crimes which get you jailed for years... I mean, Squaddies have trouble getting back into Civvy life, I don't see the Army allowing them to go shopping etc.

This is absolutely nothing new. Myra Hindley was allowed out for a breath of fresh air in Hampstead Heath—and she murdered five children.
You may or may not be surprised that she was also allowed out on shopping trips around Chatham and Rochester. Parrot of Doom said:

IIRC it was on a weekly basis and very hush hush. I won't/can't divulge on a public forum how I know this but let's just say I know a lot of people.
Made me spit I can tell you when I was told.

was detained indefinitely in 2007
I was under the impression that the only way someone can be detained indefinitely is when they are held under a mental health ruling.hospitalwebsite said:
The South London and Maudsley NHS Trust was formed in April 1999 as a result of the merger of Bethlem and Maudsley NHS Trust, Lewisham and Guys’ Mental Health NHS Trust and the mental health services of Lambeth Healthcare NHS Trust.
This would suggest the hospital she was at deals with mental health problems. So, I would guess that the "shopping trip" was possibly part of her treatment, rather than her being let out of a high security prison to pop down to Primark.
(IMHO it was probably still a lapse of judgement to take her shopping)
