Still remember doco on the Libyan Embassy siege where a few of the terrorists mingled with the captives hoping to be get out. They were found and Maggie ordered 'none are to leave alive'.

Taken into enclosed courtyard at siege end and double-tapped: problem solved.
eek

I presume you mean the Iranian Siege.

Can't find anything to support this

It's a shame, but for once I'm glad the UK is at least sticking to a policy of not paying a ransom for our nationals. Hopefully next time our nationals float through the region they'll be left alone or just robbed, rather than kidnapped, as they'll know from experience there's no money in it.
You make a good point. If any unarmed Brit went sailing through in the future, if the pirates knew there'd be an easy £1m, they kidnap them every time. Maybe Brits will learn to be more careful... and not go sailing anywhere outside the English channel. I mean, any Western civilian who gets a gun pointed at them in Iraq or Afghanistan knows that they're going to either be killed now or killed later (maybe with a rusty butter knife being used to remove their head). Better to fight there and then, surely? What's the probability of coming out alive if you've been kidnapped in such countries?

My recollection of the documentary is that Maggie made it clear when she gave the order that she didn't want any loose ends from the siege and everyone knew what she meant.

All but one of the terrorists were killed with zero mercy when the SAS entered with the remaining one pretending to be a hostage to get out. All of the hostages (including the terrorist) were taken into the courtyard and restrained, at which point the hostages pointed out the terrorist to the SAS.

One of the SAS members then started to drag the terrorist back into the embassy, to apparently "finish the job", but a senior member overruled him and pointed out that there were press cameras watching.

OT but fascinating stuff.

Just shows there is no shortage of highly trained double hard bds capable of solving these kinds of problems. Just a shame our wet politicians won't allow them to.

And why is there a Mk III Transit in the film?

Just tell the "government" of their country that if they don't do anything to tackle pirates, we will shell all of their ports back to the stone age and make any form of "boating" from their country impossible.

Breaking news is indicating that an attempted rescue operation failed due to confusion and conflicting instructions from Whitehall.

For the sake of Queen and country - would Gordon and his useless band of toadies please step down NOW.

If you shell them to a Stone Age level of civilisation, in some ways you will be pressing the fast forward button on Evolution.

Somalia is so failed, to describe it as a functioning nation state would earn you a double facepalm at the very least.

It needs an olde worlde style military governor to grip things, together with the post-natal abortion of a number of problem people.

I would imagine that as often happens, most of the nicest people were some of the first up against the wall when the Warlords rolled in. That's not meant judgementally, people have to do what they must in order to survive.

I suppose that unlocks the answer - and make sure they know that being a pirate has a load of more horrible consequences that other trades. In true proof of Darwinian theory, they will adapt (or die).

It was on Radio 4 news. I expect it will be featured on the various TV bulletins at 6.00 pm.

Those people were told not to sail in that direction and did so of their own accord. I've been to some very dodgy places(shanty towns etc) in Brazil and Venezuela and I knew I was on my own, I wouldn't expect a rescue from the SAS if things turned nasty. This pair seem to think its their right to have special forces sent in to save their backsides.

I am assuming that was sarcasm Eric. smile

That couple had just left the Seychelles, which is over 500 miles from the coast of Somalia. At what point do you say it is far enough away? You can't avoid half the globe on the basis that someone might attack you. The problem needs to be dealt with at source, not passively by staying away.

Is 600 miles away near? They have to go that way to get back to the UK.

Gordon McCocksucker has no idea. He could win a huge amount of votes by just sorting it with force. He'd actually be revered.

But he won't because he is a stupid fkwit.

If they were a pair of half caste, one legged, Scottish lesbians with learning difficulties, I expect the Lefties would move heaven and earth to send a disability coordinator there.....
