A SUSPENDED PRISON SENTENCE for that!?!?!?!

fking insanity.

The Bible is a disgusting piece of literature, many many times worse than any of those leaflets.
Which suggests that you've never read it, or if you have, never understood it.

Let me make this very easy for you.

The Old Testament is about what happened before Jesus. It is an account of the times and about a vengeful God. Unless you are Jewish, it's not a description of how you should lead your life.

The New Testament is about the life of Christ, and one of his key messages, forgiveness.

Now if you have a problem with the basic concept of forgiveness, then that is your problem.

Nobody truly understands it, hence many different interpretations.

He most certainly should NOT have been prosecuted for mocking religion. He should have the right to insult the pope or any other leader, religious or not.

What he should have been prosecuted for is fly posting. That's all.
It's harassment, it doesn't matter what you're mocking. It's like going up to all the people wearing jumpers and calling them a woolly until they take it off.
Does this mean I have to stop mocking socialists and environmentalists in town...?

Oh, woe....

Still, looking on bright side, I'll be able to flaunt myself in town with a fur coat now the law protects me from harassment ....

Deep joy....smile

Following this ruling what's going to happen to all those Gideon bibles left in hotel rooms?

Not a legal expert, but I would imagine if you targeted the same place time and again it would qualify as harassment. Not that I don't do the same thing, but even I would think it a bit extreme to do the same place 3 times.
You woolly .

Nothing as those are there with the owners permission.

Any hotel chain can say no.

Oddly I never found one in a hotel room in Saudi smile

Stand outside the religious institution if you like but to go inside is stepping over the line.
It wasn't a religious institution. It was a prayer room in an airport. I think I do agree with you though. If the airport gives permission then it's absolutely fine, just like those Gideon bibles.

The following submission is quite old and has been all over the 'net.
I'll post it because its pertinent to the bible being rather unpleasant.

"For those of you that are not following the recent controversy that has to do with Laura Schlessinger: she is a radio personality who dispenses Advice to people who call in to her radio show. Paramount Television Group is currently producing a "Dr. Laura" television show. Recently she has become a convert to Judaism and has made some statements about homosexuals that have caused the Canadian anti-hate laws to censure her. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a US resident, which was posted on the Internet.... ENJOY.

Dear Dr. Laura,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.

d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

g) Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

i) I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them (Lev.24:10-16)? Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws (Lev. 20:14)?

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging. Your devoted disciple and adoring fan. "

Well, I can't remember Jesus preaching nasty things, but I'm sure you'll dig out a verse where he suggests genocide or something.

The scientologists are not entering a place of worship. They are in public. If this bloke had been on the highstreet handing them out he wouldn't have been arrested.

so could someone do the honours please.

So are we saying it's ok for the religious to offend people in the High Street?

I've often walked down Queen Street in Cardiff and had to endure some pleb with a set of speakers and a microphone telling us we're all going to burn in hell. No sign of the Police. From time to time there have been large gatherings of yoofs rapping about Jesus, so loudly you could hear it 200m away. You can't walk past without getting harassed by them. Again no sign of the Police.

Is an atheist leaving piss take leaflets in a place of worship somehow different or worse than someone posting religious leaflets into my own home?
