That there was no limit to the number of people on earth and a related birth control policy.
That there was socio-engineering enterprises wielding so much power (religion).
There was no World Council to manage the planets resources and disputes.
Land in the Sahara was so cheap.

Hopefully religion will have gone the way of the Dodo but I doubt it.
Or that many places gave homosexuals equal rights, who knows which way things will go, maybe the population would be so low it'd be considered wrong to have sex yet not try to have kids? That's the fun thing about the future, it hasn't happened yet. Maybe there will be one religion, possibly Jedi, everyone loves starwars right?How we allowed people to over populate the planet is also a possibility.
