I really don't care what they do. South Koreans send crap north, and the North Koreans send crap south.
III - That's three things now. hehe
Jotted! Nations doing their best to annoy each other is getting old.
With Kim Jr. coming into power, it is going to be interesting to see what direction they take.
South?
I wonder if the son will be progressive and forward looking or will he be controlled by military elders and made to do more of the same or worse?

I'm quite a peacefull man really, but NK really would benifit from a full scale invasion.
Another Afghanistan? There are quite a lot of NK soldiers, best leave their government to worry about feeding them.
I'm no expert regarding such matters, but would the NK army have much of a stomach for a fight?
For about a week. Once they see the reality of how their logistics is non-existant, things would crumble pretty quickly.

I do love your overly confident analysis's on these sort of things. I seem to recall one about a certain Iraq crumbling in no time too.

The one difference is that I'm not sure that there are the fundamentalist types in NK. Are there a hardcore band of communist idealists who would hang around playing guerilla warfare games like some of the hardline muslims do in Iraq? Or would it simply be a case once the army are defeated, the people will come out their arms wide open for liberation?
(again, bearing in mind what people said about how the Iraqis would be open to 'liberation')

The iraqis were tribal and believed in the sky fairy, there was no resistance when we toppled saddam, they only started when they wanted to grab power, it is totally different in NK.

The problem with NK is china has its back and its the sole reason they have not been taken out already.

I wonder how China would feel having western forces on their border?

I think their reaction in the 1950s was pretty self evident.

Again?

I understand they (average Kim on the street) are pretty well indoctrinated. So they may well think "The west are evil scum and need to be trampled under the glorious armies feet whilst our beloved leader (:mantra:may we lick the st off his boots though we are unworthy) will send waves of terrible thoughts to trouble them so we will soon rule the world" and so on.

Maybe they have attached the armies to Kim the new computer console and the next time he plays COD it kicks off?

That's what I have a feeling might be the case. We might think that the people on the street want the glorious USA to 'liberate' them, but they might have different plans. You and I don't know if they are proud of their country, whether they have been indoctrinated into thinking that they are more righteous than all the other 'infidels' (spot a pattern yet?) and that any incoming army is the strike force of evil countries.
They may well put up a nasty fight on the streets, Iraq style. I don't think it would be as easy as killing a few soldiers and then going round drinking champagne with the locals that some people on here seem to suggest.

Iraq ( to a fashion) had a functioning 'modern' society. Clans and tribes and religuions played their part, but there was access to outside media and a large section of the population had a reasonable knowledge of the outside world.

North Korea has been totally closed for decades. They have no concept of the outside world. They are so stupified and controlled, I think the general population would just sit and wait to be told what to do. If it should kick off, there's no doubt it'd be messy.

I can imagine a few people are as dumb as to think that NK is a utopia, and the Kim is protecting them from the outside world, but you can bet your bottom dollar that there is a subculture within the society that knows perfectly well that they are in the world's largest prison camp.

I'm with JB on this that any war would be over in days. And I doubt it would be a war with many casualties. All the allies have to do is start broadcasting travel programmes on tv and the people would soon turn on their own military (if any of the military actually bothered to do anything in the first place).

I think places like Iwo Jima and Okinawa can show you what people can and will do in a tight spot. Hard to say if this lot have the same zeal. Proof of the pudding and all that, lets hope its bluster again.

Trouble is that i think modern weapons have moved way beyond human strength and courage.

GW1 was a weapons demonstration, imagine another demonstration 25 years on - hell - we don't even fly our own planes anymore. Wait for the first pilotless F35.
