I don't think I've ever fully understood the concept of being offended.
Fair enough. Do you understand sexism, racism, homophobia etc? Being offended is something for the emotionally weak or needy in my view. I can understand upset at a comment but offense? Its a bit overused.

For clarification: Of course I fully understand sexism, racism, homophobia, and I would rarely say anything that anyone would find offensive, mostly because I'm a nice person who is extremely comfortable around others of differing race, sexuality and religion.
But like I said, I work in the motor trade, and only in the last month I've heard:
"You were hired for your tits not your brains" said to a female receptionist by a salesman.
"You would say that because you are a fking " said to an Indian car salesman by a service manager.
"Tell him he's a fking bummer who's probably got aids. The bad kind of aids" to a gay salesman by a sales manager.
When you hear things like that day in day out in a relatively formal business environment, it generally desensitises you.

Sounds to me as if you work with a right bunch to tossers frankly. All trying to belittle people in more junior positions as well. Classy. But like I said, I work in the motor trade, and only in the last month I've heard:

But my work involves me being in and around many different car dealerships on a daily basis, and that's pretty standard behaviour in all of them.

Do you ever challenge it or are they "your customer" which adds an awkward dimension?
a) They are my customers. Never bite the hand that feeds you.b) None of it bothers me in the slightest.
c) It's none of my business what they do in their workplace.
So no, I wouldn't ever challenge it.
It's quite a contrast. I previously spent 9 years working in social housing and local government, where everyone was sent on numerous courses to learn how to behave, what to say and what not to say. Courses on disability, sexuality, race, gender.
It was endless. By the finish, you are terrified to make any kind of a joke in the office, just in case it upsets someone and you get a written warning.
I guess I've seen both ends of the spectrum.
Have been working at a US University this week, all students are asked for their preferred pronoun on registering.
Some of these included: Xe, Vie, Xze, Per, Hir and Vis which I didn't have a clue what those pronouns meant or implied, so I kept it simple and addressed the students by their name.
How I kept a straight face when one male student told me he Identified as a lesbian, and explained that he was finding it difficult as the lesbians were rejecting him, I really don't know.

Unfortunately that's an inevitable consequence of PC. Tell him he's a tt often enough and he'll sort himself out. Some of these included: Xe, Vie, Xze, Per, Hir and Vis which I didn't have a clue what those pronouns meant or implied, so I kept it simple and addressed the students by their name.

I think he was getting the message, he wasnt getting anywhere trying to pull the attractive femme lesbians, so thought he would try his luck with one of the butch ones, instead of rejecting his advances she gave him a good shoeing. Admittedly she was built like a brick outhouse and wouldnt look amiss on the front row of a RL pack.Kinda felt sorry for him so secured him a referral to the Psych dept.

You could call my mother a , call my Mrs a , and tell me you think I'm a , and then go on to say something completely horrific about my family, followed by being vile about everyone I know using the worst language possible, and I honestly wouldn't care.
I do understand why some people would class that sort of thing as 'being offensive', but I personally wouldn't be offended by it. I could pretend to be offended, but deep down I wouldn't care at all.
But then again I do work in the motor trade. I think that has quite an effect on you
I agree with you and am similar in a way but it is an exaggeration to say you don't understand it.You could call my mother a , call my Mrs a , and tell me you think I'm a , and then go on to say something completely horrific about my family, followed by being vile about everyone I know using the worst language possible, and I honestly wouldn't care.

If you know right from wrong then you should understand the concept quite easily.
If I told you in great detail what I was doing with your mother, an inflatable horse, half a dozen eggs and some boxing gloves last night you wouldn't be offended but you would understand that I was being a . Effectively you are just too laid back to get angry about anything, which is fine and makes your life easier but it doesn't elevate you in any way. People taking offense at bad things is exactly what keeps people in check and makes us civilised.
Obviously on that scale there are people that get too easily offended and are counter productive and we would all do better if we ignored these idiots and stopped putting them in tabloids and in turn stopped being over-offended at them. Just ignore them
