I speak from bitter experience here. In early December 2016 my eighteen month old grandson died from leukaemia. It was perfectly clear that nothing more could be done to help him and he died peacefully in a lovely childrens' hospice. There's nothing we wouldn't have done to prolong his life but we had to take the advice given by several specialists.
I can't help but think that Alfie's parents are being led up the garden path by greedy lawyers. As for their unspeakable, unemployable friends, bellowing outside the hospital, I'm lost for words.
I'll be interested to see where the money goes from the crowdfunding site.
Locally and probably further away than that people are being encouraged to give money to the mothers PayPal address. There’s a Facebook page encouraging people to do so and post pictures of their PayPal confirmation when the payment is sent. Social media affording a voice to people who's opinions are misguided, wrong, misinformed etc. We saw the same thing with the poor lad in GOSH last year.
It's a terribly sad situation but the hangers on have helped no-one. I also question why these paths for donation are opened so quickly? Why does money always enter the equation?

Alder Hey open letter, explaining the abuse their staff have been put through

I've seen somewhere that the police are now looking at social media comments and abuse.

They REALLY NEED TO PROSECUTE not simply let it slide away. Some of that stuff is vile.
An example needs to be made.

In a radio interview I heard this morning the father mentions that they would have liked to take him to Italy but now they are going to have discussions with the hospital about taking him home. He mentions something about taking it or him further (I genuinely couldn’t make out which) then goes on but “would I face further criticism “
I’m sorry but he seems either ignorant or unaware of the disruption he has caused to other patients and hospital staff and visitors. Put another simple way as my wife commented he plays the victim card doesn’t he?
Apologies it was also a TV interview .The interview is here.

He mentions that for the third day there has not been "one single problem". That seems odd considering yesterday he was struggling and the mother rang the court. Again watching this my wife mentions that she thinks a gap is opening between what the mother may think and what the father wants.

I caught the part where the father states the doctors misdiagnosed his son and how he'd known this all along. I'm pretty sure the medical team stated Alfie would most likely breath unaided for some time, once treatment was withdrawn? I have no doubt there will be a legal action against the hospital in the very near future. The father would be better off spending these final days / hours with his son, as opposed to courting the press.

By removing the ventilator the mother has been able to cuddle the child. Thats got to be priceless in the last days surelye30m3Mark said:

Would he get anywhere with legal action though; doubtful.I can't help thinking that similar to the Charlie Gard case, the parents have just been led on a merry chase; being egged on by fanatics and have got to a stage where they just can't stop so still run with it.
I've been listening to this and while I feel for the parents, it seems that the Dad is being used as a political pawn and is being led on a path that he can't easily step back from. I heard, on Radio 4, one of his lawyers and, for me, it felt that I was right - In that the lawyer was from an American Christian group.
Surely even they, now, must realise that the best thing is to just spend the last hours/days/however long with their child - All their memories will be of this ugly fight and not of their son...

I had the misfortune to glimpse at a Facebook thread full of religious Americans, it's scary. Apparently the queen should do something, it's all because we're not Catholic, why don't we listen to the pope, nobody can speak up because Catholics have only just been allowed into office.... It's just mental.

Have we really reached a tipping point in society where education is so undervalued that those with none have an equal say in matters they know nothing about as those with extensive knowledge?
Thanks for the enlightening post Wiccan, even without the specific answers to what the poor kid is suffering from, you explain things in a way that makes even a relative numpty like me understand what is happening and why prolonging life if futile. I have to say, the above is what really worries me, when society stops valuing knowledge and experience, it loses it purpose.Edited by TurbosSuck on Thursday 26th April 10:07
This is really an abhorrent show from all concerned. For years 'trial by media' has really grated me, yet now we are at a worse level, 'trial by social media'.
You have to wonder about the mindset of those raging at the hospital door, spreading bile online, and donating to the gofundme page. Do they have so much self will to not research what they're protesting, or really think that they know better than highly trained experts? Can they really believe that the key objective of any hospital is not to provide care and hopeful recovery?
I have some sympathy with the parents, there can be little doubt that they are driven by incredible grief, but someone close to them owes it to have a word with them.
I'll be interested to see if when Alfie passes if they donate the £123K (?) raised to a charity for his condition?

All
I have been thinking about this situation last night and this morning, it is shocking and appalling what the staff at Alder Hey are having to put up with.
What better way to show that not all the public feel like this than to support them
https://donate.alderheycharity.org/public/
Can I encourage like minded PHers to donate, and show some support for a world class organisation and some brilliant professionals

1. Whilst everyone is entitled to their own opinion, no one is entitled to their own facts.
2. Not all opinions are equal.
In this case, the opinions of medical experts are worth more than the opinion of some fat tattooed bint in leggings puffing on a fag outside the hospital.
