Just made me contact an ex girlfriend that lives in that area.

Nice area, I always felt safe wandering around or driving.

Just that it's too easy to get hold of guns legally.

Sad news.

Does she know any more about it than what is being currently reported?

Not in California its not.
Licence required incl written test, 10 day wait required, no magazines >10 rounds, any kind of "tactical" equipment banned, no private sales etc etc etc.

Would it really make any difference when you just buy it in another state and drive back home with it

She's watching the news. Getting the same reports as here.

The politicians will trot out the usual 'thoughts and prayers' and nothing will happen.

Trump will say that if everyone in the bar was armed then they'd be okay and that he'd have stopped the shooter even though he was unarmed...

One of the dead is a 29 year veteran of the Ventura Sheriff's Dept who was due to retire in a few months.

I guess it's "thoughts & prayers" time again then ? When are they actually going to do something - like even recognise they have an issue ?

What a sad loss of life frown

Since there is no 20 page thread on PH about it, I presume it's not Islamist terrorism related?

Depressingly, my first thought was also that it wouldn't surprise me if the President's suggested solution will be to arm bartenders.

Absolutely this. I'd put a pound on him trotting out the line about people being armed.

Few hours old now so might be incorrect, but here he is described as having shot the guard at the door first and being of "middle eastern" appearance

I believe it’s possible to drive from one US state to another. So if I lived in a state where it’s tricky to buy a gun but really want one I could drive to another state.

In the UK I would need to deal with dodgy characters or go through the vetting.

Very sad news but just seems to be an all too regular event. I was in Thousand Oaks a few weeks ago and have family living less than 3 miles from where it occurred.
